It's that time of year again — fall! Pumpkin Spice Lattes, sweaters and back to school. With college classes starting just around the corner for some of us, and having previously started for others, redecorating and spicing up your room is a great way to start the procrastination train early. In honor of this glorious season, give your room that new feng shui it deserves with these simple (and affordable!) tips.
1. Throw pillows
Throw pillows can add some personality to your bed, or a chair in your room. Whether you go with chevron, sparkly, quote pillows, or an abstract design, make sure it ties in with something in your room. Throw pillows can be pretty pricey...unless you know where to look! Try JCPenney's clearance section, TJ Maxx, or even Bed, Bath and Beyond can have some cute ones on sale.
2. Wall art
The great thing about wall art is that it can say whatever you want it to say. A picture of the beach? Utter relaxation. Inspirational quote? It'll keep your spirits high during finals. The city skyline? Keep moving and stay busy! Hang up as little or as much wall art as you see fit, and it doesn't have to break your bank. Again, Ross and TJ Maxx have ridiculously good deals on canvas to hang up. You can even try and DIY your own wall art, if you're particularly crafty!
3. Lighting
Paper lanterns, last season's Christmas lights, or even a new desk lamp can help brighten up your space (pun intended). Lighting can help make your room feel cozier, warmer, and add that 'charm' you might be looking for. I found my paper lantern lights on clearance at Target, but string lights are easily found at a hardware store, or Wal-Mart. Cheap, cute, and easy to hang up!
4. DIY crafts
DIY crafts are something I really try to stay away from, as I've branded myself completely un-artistic. But there are some surprisingly simple and inexpensive crafts that even I can manage! For example, adding one of these cool espresso candles to your space can really bring in a personalized touch (and something to brag about!). Mason jars are also really in right now, so buying a mason jar and stuffing string lights inside it looks neat, and probably takes all of thirty seconds!
The photo above shows jewelry hung on knobs that have been slapped on a piece of wood. GoodWill is a good place to look for funky knobs, then all you have to do is go down to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy a piece of wood finishing! Grab some strong glue and voila! Look at you go.
5. Area rug
Every part of your room, even down to the floor you walk on, deserves some love! Especially if you have ugly carpet. But even if you don't, an area rug (or accent rug) can be the perfect piece in terms of having the harmony restored to your room. Again, the possibilities are endless with rugs. What about a colorful chevron pattern? Or a classy black and white piece? Or maybe you want to tone it down to the ground with a neutral color rug. Whatever you choose, make sure you love it!
All these choices can be found at places like H&M, Target, and Bed, Bath & Beyond for under twenty dollars! Rugs are very important -- I mean, where would Aladdin be without his trusty rug? Think of that next time you are debating about whether or not to buy one.
