Advice To College Students From Their High School Teachers
Quibbles and Tea from Bagshot Row

During a student's senior year, their guides for the college process typically come in the form of their teachers who edit draft upon draft of college essay, encourage them to apply to their reach school or a school they may have never considered, and coach them through the unavoidable "I'm going to college!!?!?" panic attacks. After depending for many months on these skillful individual, it can be an abrupt change to leave for college un-aided by their wisdom and sagacious advise....until now. Here is some advise from high-school teachers to their student's poised to embark on their first day of college, and even for those who are already knee deep in their college experience.

1. “Find your love for learning!”

Let's face it, if you aren't captivated by the notion that secondary education is meant to expand your mind, and help you further study the areas of academia you enjoy the most, then you probably won't learn anything at all, let alone retain information.

2. "Sit in the front of the room. There are no cool points in college, this is the educational grown up table.”

I can attest to the power of sitting in the front of the classroom, not only can you gain brownie points by becoming more friendly with the professor but, "Studies show that students who sit in the front and center (middle) of the classroom tend to achieve higher average exam scores."

3. "It is important not to change to fit in. Always be true to yourself and the right people will like you and respect you for it. It is easy to assume the only way to make friends is to “do the college thing”but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.”

At the invocation of my freshman year, the president of my college addressed by class and stated, "In grade school you gain friends by circumstance; in college you make friends by choice." In college as long as you follow the advice from the teacher above, you will make extraordinary friends, but if you brand yourself as something you are not you will surround yourself with people more by circumstance than choice. 4. “Read the syllabus thoroughly. Don’t expect your professors to continually remind you about assignments. This ain’t high school; you can’t ‘take’ the zero.”

4. “Read the syllabus thoroughly. Don’t expect your professors to continually remind you about assignments. This ain’t high school; you can’t ‘take’ the zero.”

While you may get the occasional professor who will dutifully remind you of due dates, most will layout EVERY assignment that you will need to hand in and when. The best thing to do after you fill out a syllabus is to plug every date into a calendar...you don't want to miss the memo for the 10 page paper due at the end of the term.

5. “Keep up with your reading and don’t wait until the last minute to write your papers!"

Find ways to manage your time in college by blocking out large reading assignments and papers over the course of a few days.In college there are fewer "busy work" assignments are more larger and time consuming assignments so students who are able to manage their time end up being healthier, happier, and less stressed than those who cannot or chose not to do so.

6. "Soak in every second of the diversity and independence."

7. “It’s okay to change your major if you fall in love with a different intellectual pursuit. The future is a long time.”

It is not uncommon at all for student's to change their majors, even after taking classes in the major they declared upon acceptance to their school. For example: "At Penn State, 80 percent of freshmen — even those who have declared a major — say they are uncertain about their major, and half will change their minds after they declare, sometimes more than once."

8. “Find a zone where you can actually work and think. This probably won’t be your dorm and might not be the library. However, a space for intellectual reflection and focus is the key to higher learning.”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
