There’s a reason many girls feel like they can relate to Taylor Swift. Taylor (I like to pretend we’re on a first name basis) is awkward, fun-loving, dances in a manner that makes onlookers feel uncomfortable and has absolutely no idea how to communicate with those who have a Y-chromosome — she IS us. Through breakups, makeups, crushes, mistake and having absolutely no clue what to do when it comes to boys, Taylor is there for us. With her experiences turned into lyrics, Taylor helps heal our broken hearts and focus on loving ourselves.
1. "Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play. And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake shake. I shake it off, I shake it off."
Calling all mean girls, ex-boyfriends, ex-friends, people that just don’t like me: You’ve wronged me or have hurt my feelings, but that’s OK. Go on with your name-calling or talking behind my back, I'll just shake it off.
2. “I knew you were trouble when you walked in … No apologies. He'll never see you cry, Pretends he doesn't know that he's the reason why.”
THE BAD BOY. You’ve heard the rumors, you know his past, but you know that it will end well because you’ll change him into the relationship guy! No, no you will not. He walks out of your life with as little effort as he entered. Without an explanation, you’re left wondering what happened until you realize it’s your fault for getting into it in the first place. Stop "lying on the cold hard ground," you're too good for him.
3. “I’ve been spending the last eight months thinking all love ever does is break, and burn, and end…but in a Wednesday, in a café, I watched it begin again.”
When you first get out of a relationship, you’re heartbroken (unless you’re the bad boy in “I Knew You Were Trouble”). It doesn’t matter who broke up with whom, a part of your life is now just a memory, and you don’t think you’ll ever find someone like that again. But you will, and when it happens you’ll wonder how you could be so naive. To that girl who just broke up with her high school boyfriend, I’ve been there …listen to “Begin Again,” it’s all going to work out, I promise.
4. “You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me, but we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together.”
The girl who was listening to “Begin Again” is now the one who won’t stop listening to “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” No longer are you upset by what happened; you’re just annoyed. He’s calling you nonstop begging for another chance, and when you give it to him, he makes the mistakes he promised to never repeat. You are done with him ... for real this time.
5. “Tonight’s the night when we forget about the heartbreaks, it’s time … I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling 22, everything will be alright if you keep me next to you.”
Who’s there when the when the mean girl is, well ... being mean? Who comforted you when that bad boy you "dated" left you? Who was there for you when you cried when you finally broke up with your boyfriend? And who was there to celebrate when you told him you would never get back together with him? Your sisters and best friends are the people who matter the most, and "22" is about that. Forget about the boys, forget about the people who’ve hurt you, and focus on yourself. You’re only young for so long, make the most of it instead of being upset over a failed relationship.
Thanks for all your advice Taylor! You’ll “never go out of style.”
