Advice to High School Seniors

Hey, high school seniors.

It's me, the second semester college freshman.

I know I'm probably the last person you want to be hearing from as you count down the days to graduation, but hear me out. I've been told I have some pretty good advice.

1. Take lots of pictures.

I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear from me, especially if your parents and teachers have been telling you the same thing. It's true though. I've only been out of high school for seven to eight months and I'm already regretting not taking more pictures during high school. People might think it's silly to take pictures with your friends at every football game or during every Spirit Week activity, but trust me, you'll want them.

2. Don't shy away from the dorm life just because of the communal bathroom situation.

Honestly, the bathroom situation isn't even that bad. The most people I've seen in the bathroom at one time is four. I feel like the dorm life is crucial to your college experience. I've made more friends in my dorm building than I have in my classes. The dorm life makes your social life a lot better and helps with your organizational skills (especially if you're a messy person like me).

3. Befriend your RA's.

The RA's need to be your best friends. If you're having problems with people on your floor or in your classes, you're more than likely going to go to your RA's for help. Wouldn't it make sense to be friends with them? They can put in a good word for you if you're trying to work in Housing. They can help you get out of trouble if you find yourself in some. Your RA's need to be your best friends.

4. Don't start counting down the days to graduation just yet.

If you're like me, you've probably been counting down the days to graduation since senior year started (or maybe even before then). I here to tell you that you should stop doing that. I know you're excited to walk across the stage and out of those high school doors for the last time. However, while you're busy marking off the days on your calendar, your final high school moments are flying by right before your eyes. Your last football game. Your last pep rally. Your last days of classes. You're going to regret not paying more attention through these moments. I know I do.

5. And finally, don't be too upset if you don't stay friends with everyone you're friends with in high school.

Once you get to college, you're going to be more focused on making friends at your new school rather than keeping up with everyone from your high school. I'm pretty sure I only keep up with about four people from my graduating class. Don't be upset. It's natural.

Well, high school seniors, that's my advice to you. Enjoy your final moments of high school. Look forward to college. You'll make new friends. You'll do well in your classes. I'm excited for you.

Sincerely,

A second-semester college freshman.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
