So you're a second semester senior, and you can't wait until you have a diploma in your hand and you're walking across that stage. I've got news for you, it's not here yet. There's so much to do before you go off to college, which can make for a stressful time. You might not even have picked a college yet, but regardless, here are some things I wish someone had told me before I went to college.
1. Finish out your year strong
I know from experience that it can be tough to concentrate during your second semester. All of your friends have picked a school, and you're trying to decide. On top of it all, you've still got school work; tests, quizzes, and essays to be finished. Don't get the thrill of it all get to you, your school work still matters. College's will look at your final grades, even if you've already been admitted. Not to mention, the more you work now will give you a good foundation to return to in the fall.
2. Cherish your friends
You're probably feeling nostalgic because the time you have with them is almost up. Don't worry those who want to be in your life will make the effort, even when miles separate you. I encourage you to not burn bridges. Just because you're going to college doesn't mean you won't see them again. Maintain your friendships, you never know when you'll need them.
3. Get a summer job
The last thing you probably want to do is get a job. But, a job can help provide for some spending money, when you feel bad for asking mom or dad. Not only will a job provide you with money, but it will likely teach you a strong work ethic. Trust me, that will come in handy at college.
4. Spend time with your parents
I know that parents can get on your nerves, and odds are you get on theirs. However, no matter how much they seem like they're glad to finally have you out of the house, they're going to miss you. And I'll let you in on a little secret: you're going to miss them. So, before you go off to college and bask in the new freedom you have, spend some quality time with your family. They will appreciate it later.
5. Get an early start on planning
No matter how many lists you look at on Pinterest, the real truth about dorm shopping is that it takes time, lots of time. My advice to you is get a head start on this shopping, make a list of everything you think you'll need and add to it over time. This way you can go shopping before the crowds, and ensure that you get everything that you need. Avoid last minute shopping, and stress.
6. Learn how to live on a budget
Hopefully, you've been saving up, and maybe you even got a summer job. Both of those things will help you tremendously at college, but only if you understand that you'll be living on a budget. After buying your own snacks, and going shopping you really understand how much things cost. Learn to pace yourself, so that you don't have to ask mom for money as often!
7. Make the most of your summer
Have fun! Be sure to enjoy the good company of your friends, and all of the adventures that you can have before you go off to school. Summer is stress-free, so take your mind off of academics, and celebrate the fact that you're done with high school!
8. Appreciate Your Home
Like I said before, I'm sure you can't wait to get out of your hometown. But, before you leave take a little time to appreciate what it has to offer. Visit your favorite spots, restaurants, and attractions. This way, you leave on a good note, knowing that you didn't miss a thing! After all, it is the place that raised you. Most importantly, appreciate your own home. Take advantage of the free food, comfortable bed, and clean showers; you're really going to miss it.
9. Reach out
More than likely you have friends that are already in college. Reach out to them and ask them for advice or help. It definitely helps to know what you'll really need your first year at college, and their tips and tricks for surviving the year.
10. Make Time for Yourself
My last piece of advice for you is to take time for yourself. I can't stress how important it is to know yourself before you go off to school. At college, it can be easy to get lost in the chaos, and end up so far from where you started. The more you know yourself, and recognize the things that make you who you are, the easier your first year will be.
I hope that this advice is helpful, it's certainly what I needed to hear before I started college. Don't be afraid to start something new, you have an amazing experience ahead of you that is different for everyone!
Congratulations, you're almost there!
