"Wait, so boys aren't allowed in your dorms?"
"You have a curfew?!"
"No drinking or sex? What kind of college do you go to?"
These are questions I'm sure every Christian university student gets asked regularly during winter and summer breaks by friends and family. I mean, to be fair, the rules and honors codes our schools uphold are definitely not normal.
I mean, we're adults! We should be allowed to finally make our own decisions, choose how to live our lives, and figure out who we want to be.
But what if we aren't ready...
You see, I believe your years at college create the building blocks to your life and need to be held to a higher standard.
That might sound a little intense, but let me explain why.
Let's first check off the obvious point that our universities have codes in place because Christians, in general, are against drinking, premarital sex and a list of other things. Yes, we are against those things, but why enforce against them by using rules?
The answer to that question lies in the simple truth that as humans we have very little self discipline. Yes, it is a trait that can be strengthened, but overall, we kind of suck at it.
I mean think about all of those times you told yourself that you would never eat sugar again and within the hour a friend offers you an Oreo and you can't resist! (and there's even peanut butter to dip it in. I mean come on.)
I just want to remind everyone that suddenly "being in the technical age of adulthood" does not make you suddenly more wise about how to manage your life.
Let's be real, most of us college students act like we have it together, but in reality we're getting four hours of sleep and have learned to worship nap time.
On top of that, we also have this twisted view of what it means to be an adult. Somehow it's thought that by having to obey rules, you are subjecting yourself and restricting your personal freedoms.
Personally, I believe having rules in place holds me to a higher standard. Of course, I can choose whether I want to follow those rules or not, but it ultimately narrows down to what you value.
I mean, if we can't follow a couple of rules at school (that as Christians we should be following anyways) how can we begin to obey God's rules?
If you are not a Christian, or do not go to a Christian university, my whole argument may seem irrelevant to you. Obviously, the whole world does not live by the same morals and standards as Christians do.
But even if I wasn't a follower of Christ, I feel like I can argue that the rules set in place at my university would still somewhat keep me grounded. Even at least a little!
I guess all I'm trying to say is that having rules when you're in college is really O.K., especially ones that sustain what I already morally hold true to. Even if you're not a fan, just stick it out for the rest of the time you're at school.
You'll live.
