It’s been four years since the world has had the opportunity to listen to a full-length album by Adele, and now, the wait is over. With the release of “Hello,” the first single from her third album, 25, Adele tweeted this statement on Twitter.
Adele started off by saying she wasted a big portion of her life wishing things were different. “When I was 7, I wanted to be 8. When I was 8, I wanted to be 12. When I turned 12 I just wanted to be 18… I feel like I spent my whole life so far wishing it away,” the singer wrote.
In her own words, her second record, 21, was a break-up album. It was all about what she’s lost by losing other people, and her new album, 25, strays away from that version of herself.
This is probably because a lot has changed since Adele released her sophomore album, 21. Since that record, Adele has become a wife and mother. It makes sense that Adele has made amends with all the pain in her past and is now focusing on herself. She’s growing and maturing like we all hope to do, and this album promises to reflect that.
“I haven’t got time to hold on to the crumbs of my past like I used to. What’s done is done,” Adele wrote. She’s getting to know herself as is, and embracing all the things she has and has not done, and is ready for what’s next.
The first single, “Hello,” is assumed to be about lost love and wanting to make amends, but ultimately knowing it’s over. But after reading this statement, I realized that this could be about herself. As an amateur analysis, “Hello” might be about Adele making up with herself for all the things she’s missed out on and done in her past by wishing she was someplace else.
With lines like “Hello from the other side /I must've called a thousand times/ To tell you I'm sorry, for everything that I've done / To tell you I'm sorry, for breaking your heart/ But it don't matter, it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore,” "Hello" could be interpreted as Adele journeying to coming to terms with her past, realizing she’s accepted it, and moving on.
Adele’s third studio album, 25, will officially be released on Nov. 20, and if this single is anything like the album, I’ll be waiting to get my copy ASAP. Meanwhile, Adele will be waiting for her Grammy awards to roll in.
