Of course there are plenty of occurrences that no one ever tells you about that takes place in college. Sometimes people leave out information so they do not scare you away, sometimes people leave out information because you just need to experience it for yourself and sometimes experiences cannot be put into words! Each and every one of us are different, and we all experience college in different ways. Here are just some happenings that I noticed to be pretty universal for almost everyone!
How friendships are really going to go down
People forget to mention how the first couple weeks of college are super scary, so you smile and say hello to all the people you recognize from the freshmen welcome events. This results in you awkwardly smiling and waving to certain individuals for the rest of your college experience even though, you truly haven't spoken to them since freshmen year. People also do not tell you about the heartbreaks that can occur in college friendships.
Of course, after graduation, you must part ways with most of your friends that become your complete support system these last couple of years, which I am so not looking forward to. But, people certainly do not inform you about the friendships that get cut shorter than the typical four years. They forget to mention how it is a possibility that your best friend may transfer to a different school in a different state, or all of your friends could graduate before you do. Both of these scenarios leave you broken-hearted, lost, and completely bummed all while trying to be super happy for them as well.
Just when you think that you got this all down, you don't
Okay, after the first couple of weeks kicked the crap out of you, you finally have every stinking assignment, test, quiz, project, etc. logged into your calendar and according to this now-cramped calendar, you could really relax a bit this evening and start studying tomorrow morning. You get yourself a delicious cappuccino, someone actually holds the door for you and you are really loving the sunshine walking around campus... you got this whole college thing down.
At 2:43 a.m. you sit straight up in bed and realize that you forgot your professor mentioned an additional assignment in class Monday that you forgot to put in your planner. You check your phone's time, and your heart sinks into your gut. You now have six hours until this assignment is due at the beginning of class. Oh and for some reason your brain really decides to work at three in the morning, because you also have a quiz following the lecture on the next four chapters that you haven't read yet. Cue the neverending string of cuss words! College is actually like playing "Mario Kart." You start feeling yourself thinking you're slaying it in first place, but then realize you've been looking at the wrong screen, and you're in fact actually smashing into walls and falling off of mushrooms.
Your culinary skills will reach new heights of creativity
You went into college as a picky eater, determined that carbs were the devil because you didn't want the freshman 15. But now, you can't even remember the last time you didn't wear leggings, and you're just trying to make it through the semester as cheaply as possible so you can spend what little money you have on more fun things. I'd also like to point out that Red Robin had to have ripped off some poor college student's idea for their new "Red Ramen Burger."
After college you'll go into life with a new appreciation of food. After four straight months of Ramen and spray cheese on Saltines, you'll attack your family's Thanksgiving table to the point where your relatives will be convinced that you have the strongest case of the munchies they've ever seen!
You'll appear to be the biggest hypocrite
After years of blood, sweat and many tears... graduation day finally comes and you couldn't be more ecstatic! You start to feel emotional and form sentimental attachments to the campus you called home for the last four-plus years. You'll post sad Instagram posts about your last meal in the cafeteria... even though you did nothing but complain about the food every single day. You will post about the amazing times and memories you've had even though you felt as though you weren't going to make it through the day on a daily basis.
But truth be told, these years have been precious memories. These are the years we learn the most about ourselves, and who we wish to be in this world. We had to go through this life changing, and mind-breaking time in order to become who we are meant to be. This is the time in our lives where we accomplished something even when there were times that we didn't believe in ourselves. We also will never forget these years because during this time was when we met some of the best and most life-changing people.
