Uproot Your Life

Uprooting your life to start anew is never an easy decision. It’s scary to move away from a place you’ve called home for years, maybe for your whole life. It takes money, and time, and effort to get out and do your own thing, but let me tell you, it’ll be the most amazing decision of your life.

In May 2016, I graduated from college ready to tackle the world. I, like many others, had been limiting my job search to the local area, in western Pa. But at some point I realized that if I am going to get a job, I am going to go out there and get the best job I can, not just a job within a two hour radius. So I put myself out there in Boston, Mass., one of the science epicenters in our country, and I got an amazing job. And no, it isn’t that easy for everyone, but it isn't easy finding a job when you limit yourself either.

Now I want to encourage you to uproot. Go and find the job you deserve. Don’t be afraid to develop yourself, simply because it isn’t in the city all of your friends are in. We have all felt stuck in a hole of drama, a hole dug because we still live near the same people we grew up with. We have all desired to go somewhere new, to have a change of pace, because everyday life is monotonous, filled with the same places you’ve been going to for years. We all have the same commute, the same habits, for years at a time, but we never want to break them. We have all desired to become more, but we let these holes be our excuse. This life we have built feels concrete, and comforting to us, because we do not want to go dig other holes elsewhere. if you thrive in those holes, in those habits, then you definitely should stay where you are. But if you’ve ever felt that there is more in life to find, then you should make the commitment to see what is out there.

Find the job and go. Find the school and go. Find the desire to go, and go. Your friends will be your friends no matter where you are, your family will be your family no matter where you are. There will always be new favorite restaurants and new friends to explore new places with. So sit here and think about your desires. Do you want to live where there’s 365 days of sunshine, or the beach, or the woods, or the city? Do you want to work at the most prestigious institution, or finally receive your dream position? Decide what you want, and go for it.

Do not let your holes define you. Do not be afraid to move. it was the best decision of my life, and I know you have seen other friends who have made it the best decision of their lives. I know this article won't change your mind, but I want it to remind you that you have the ability to choose your desires, climb out of your holes, and go fulfil them. Do not let your old life be an excuse for not grabbing a new one. Just go uproot.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
