This topic may seem completely random and irrelevant to many, but in the wake of my buying tickets to an Aaron Carter concert for this coming February, I feel that it deserves some attention. My friends and I were both perplexed and ecstatic when we heard word going around our Ann Arbor campus that Aaron Carter, 2000’s heart-throb and pop sensation, would be performing at a local bar in February.
For those of you who need some reference, Carter performed hilarious and catchy hits such as “Aaron’s Party (Come and Get It)” and a rendition of “I Want Candy” - if you have yet to listen to these, I recommend looking them up ASAP, because you will never be sad again.
So, back to the point. When Carter finally released his tickets as available for purchase online, I was thrilled. However, I took my time looking at them, assuming that no one would really care about the washed-up, now-coke-addict. To my surprise, the tickets sold out before I was able to even purchase one (luckily, another show was added to which I was able to purchase tickets - thank God). More people were interested in this coke addict than I had originally thought. The buzz began among my friends, who took to his Twitter account to show him some Ann Arbor love. With all of the excitement, I decided to load up my Spotify with every Aaron Carter song I could think of. Not that I didn’t listen to him before this all happened, because believe me, I did; but as I relived some of his more obscure songs, I quickly became a born-again superfan.
My obsession with Aaron Carter has been ongoing and ridiculous. I am an almost-twenty-year-old girl who can sing every word to “My Internet Girl” and “Amercia A O” (so #patriotic). This concert is perhaps the best and worst thing that could have happened to me, as it has already refueled my strange obsession. But, really, why isn’t everyone as obsessed with him as I am? Yes, he may have had a weird, stalking-like episode with Hilary Duff; yes, he may have been a pretty big coke addict at one point. However, did anybody see his wild and ~flirty~ moves on Dancing With The Stars?! Did anybody else listen to “Summertime” while dancing around in a bikini on the couch (this was in fact a real thing that I did at the ripe age of nine years old #blessed).
Much like I’m beginning to feel at school, some people are just eventually washed up. Stars become outdated, their songs disliked, and their dreams crushed. Carter seemed to enjoy his fifteen minutes of fame, but who’s to say we can’t bring back the 2000’s and dance around in our bikinis to “Summertime” now? I most certainly will be requesting his old hits at parties from now on, despite the annoyed glares I will undoubtedly receive from surrounding frat boys. Aaron Carter will go down in history as a true legend. He has already had a revival in my book, but now it’s time to get the rest of the world to agree! #AC2k16
