9 New Year's Resolutions That You Should Be Making

Most resolutions go unfulfilled. Why don't we change that?

9 New Year's Resolutions That You Should Be Making

When it comes to the New Year, there are many resolutions made that are similar among the general population. Lose weight, quit smoking, find a girl/boyfriend, etc. These are all very ambitious and often go unfulfilled. But resolutions should be accomplishable and not completely outrageous. Here are nine actually possible resolutions for 2016.

1. Make an effort to be healthy.

This doesn't mean "lose weight" or "get skinny"; this just means that you should think twice about what goes into your body and make smart decisions. It also means that you should go at your own pace, so you don't burn yourself out hitting the gym that first month or only eating salad for a week straight.

2. Make a new friend.

This can be romantic or not, but another friend is always a good thing. Whether it's someone to be there for you through thick and thin or someone to just chill out with, a friend is constantly valuable.

3. Cut off toxic relationships.

I have had my fair share of toxic people in my life, and trust me: You would feel much better if toxic people were no longer involved in yours. If someone makes you feel like crap and you've tried to resolve it, there is not much else you can do about it. And if you can’t get them out of your life completely, at least distance yourself from that person. Do not feel like you owe that person anything, no matter how long you have been friends. It’s just not healthy or worth it.

4. Clean out your closet.

There is no better way to feel like you have your life together than a clean and updated closet. If you haven't worn a piece in over a year, and there is no significant sentiment attached, there is no reason you should still be holding on to it.

5. Volunteer.

Giving your time to someone less fortunate can be one of the most fulfilling experiences you can have. It's not that hard to find a cause you care about, take a weekend and go and help out those who need it.

6. Be a good friend.

Along with making friends, you should try to keep the good ones you have. These people will help you through the worst of times, so it is important to repay the favor. If keeping their friendship is important to you, you should be as good of a friend as you can, and if you care, it shouldn’t be that hard to do either.

7. Find a hobby.

Everyone needs a hobby. Free time is hard to come by; when it does come around, don't find yourself realizing that you have nothing to do. Picking up an instrument, writing that blog you’ve always wanted to, or just sitting down with a good book will make it so your year is never boring.

8. Do some soul searching.

Everyone could do well with some soul searching, no matter the age. Make sure that your life is going how you want it to.

9. Get outside.

Fresh air is all around, but in today's technology-distracted world, we need to make an effort to go and appreciate the beauty of nature. Don't let your desktop background be the most beautiful view you see this next year.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
