Life, the way we live it, is not ideal for a happy existence. That's a really powerful statement and some may disagree but really... think about it. Life itself is full of stresses and obligations and commitments, to say nothing of unkindness, unfairness and unpleasantness. Though, most people are in search to live a happy lifestyle. But how can we with all the gunk surrounding us? With all of those things, it's hard to find time for even a little bit of joy. Well... I am here to (attempt) to help. The following is a list of things I do to make my life a little brighter. I hope they can be of use to you as well!
1. Keep a potted plant
Plants brighten up any room, and provide a quiet sort of company. Plus, there's a sense of accomplishment in taking care of something. I am partial to cacti, because they are practically impossible to kill.
2. Carry bubbles wherever you go
In every single bag I carry, there's a little bitty bottle of bubbles. Blowing bubbles makes even the most boring situations more fun. The best part is watching strangers try to figure out where they're coming from and seeing their faces morph into incredulous stares when they realize.
3. Compliment everybody
One simple compliment can go a long way. Just do it. Even if they're a complete stranger. If you have something nice to say, just blurt it out. Sometimes they look a little confused, but most of the time they're genuinely pleased. Making someone else smile never fails to brighten my day.
4. Say hi to every dog you see
Dogs are one of the best parts of being alive, in my opinion. They are always happy to see you, even if you've never met before. Wave at every single one you see. Sometimes, you'll even get to pet them and that's the best.
5. Look at the stars
Take a second and look up. Remember how beautiful the universe that you live in is. Remember that you're a part of it all.
6. Paint your nails
The act of painting my nails is one of the most relaxing things I do. It's something easy to concentrate on, and it's a great way to practice self-care.
7. Pun as often as you can
Go ahead, make that awful pun. Add some unexpected humor to your life.
8. Invest in the best smelling soap you can
It makes a difference, going around smelling like a flower garden. It always makes me feel a little bit better about myself.
9. Tea
Making tea has become something of a ritual for me. It's a few minutes in which all that matters is doing one simple thing well. And, at the end of it, a mug of warm tea is like a hug.
