In honor of the event that the last round of acceptance letters just went out to the fightin’ Texas Aggie class of 2020 (aye!) I thought I would write something to help these future Aggies make the most of their senior year of high school. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best of luck as your college adventure is about to begin.
1. Stop stressing out and pray Instead
The majority of high school seniors are freaking out about where to go to college. Then when they get in they worry about who their roommate is going to be, if they will meet friends, if they will get chosen for a sorority/fraternity and so much more.
The truth is I met so many people who were shoe-ins for colleges and didn’t make it to them, and I also met people who should have never gotten into the schools they did. The bottom line is God is going to put you right where he wants you, and he has all the other stuff under control too, I promise! So next time you worry, just say a prayer.
2. Go do something with your family
Leaving my family was never something I worried about. But as soon as I got college, I missed mine so much. Coming home to a roommate is not the same as coming home to people who have loved you and known you your whole life.
Also while you can not wait to leave, you're parents are dreading the fact you're going to be all grown up! So take the time to spend with them. Trust me — you’re going to miss them when you are gone.
3. Don't worry about your grades, while you still can
After you get your acceptance letter in high school, you do not have to worry about school as much. Make the wise choices always. Keep your grades high enough to keep any scholarships, and still really try to get those AP credits.
However, every now and then take a break and enjoy all this time you have to not do work non-stop, trust me being able to not study goes away when you get into college.
4. Prom isn't that big of a deal
It will be over so quick. So please spare your mom spending hundreds of dollars on that prom dress and get the cheaper one.
5. Save more than you are saving
The phrase "Poor college student." is definitely true. Whatever money you are putting into savings from your part-time job right now, save 10 percent more. When you get into college, odds are you won't have time to have a job. If you don't save now, your savings will be gone before you know it.
6. Don't let your faith go away when you get to college
Your faith when you get to college will either grow stronger, or it will completely start withering away. For the first time ever, your faith will not be your parents — it will be your choice to go to church. If you had any youth leaders, they are not going to be there in the same town as you anymore.
You will even have professors who will tell you God is not real. Get ready to be challenged like never before. Before you get into college, make sure you know your values. Also get involved in a church as soon as you can. College is such a great opportunity to find out how much the Lord really loves you, don't let this get away from you.
7. Invest in the people who need you the most
Be there for your friends who do not have the perfect home lives or just need someone to talk to. If you believe in the Lord, make sure you are trying to share him with people. If you are a coach or lead kids of any kind, spend time with them before you go. They look up to more than you realize. You won't regret this time spent with people who really needed you.
8. Eat real food while you can
There is nothing like a home cooked meal, and in college meals like this are hard to find. Get ready for lots of ramen and microwave mac and cheese. If you're lucky you can even buy the Sponge Bob kind.
9. Enjoy the moment
Do not try and rush to college. Enjoy being a kid while you can. Remember this is the last time your family and your friends will all be in the same place.
