After rereading the entire Harry Potter series this summer (probably for the eighth time) I realized that J.K Rowling doesn’t have a heart. I know that sounds a little harsh, BUT she killed numerous characters her readers loved and threw so many turns in the story that fans of the novels became emotional wrecks. (I’m still scarred by the death of Fred).
Here are just a few of the times Rowling left me with a broken heart throughout the series.
1. When she let Dobby die.
WHY J.K WHY?! Dobby was never a bad house elf who deserved to be stabbed by Bellatrix Lestrange. A good friend and entertaining character, Dobby brought life to all of the chapters he graced our presence with. His loyalty to his friends inspired us all, and we will never forget him or his role in the novels.
2. When J.K Rowling brought our hopes up about Harry moving in with Sirius.
When Sirius asked Harry to live with him, our hearts soared. This was it! Harry’s escape from the Dursley’s and a path to a better life. But, of course, nothing good could happen to Harry. Sirius’ name was not cleared and, therefore, had to hide out, leaving Harry at his dreary home at number 4 Privet Drive and letting us down in the process.
3. When Rowling decided to leave Teddy Lupin an orphan just like Harry had been as a child.
Granted, he does have a pretty cool godfather to look after him (Harry), but it’s nothing like having your real parents by your side. Remus and Tonks Lupin died for a noble cause in the fight against Lord Voldemort, just like Harry’s did, but leaving their poor son an orphan was a horrible thing to do.
4. Waiting until THE LAST BOOK to finally let Ron and Hermione get together.
We knew they were meant to be the entire time, and J.K didn’t let their destiny unfold until the END of the LAST book. Not gonna lie, I was freakin’ elated when they finally decided to be a couple and it was definitely worth the wait but I just wish we had more time to enjoy Ronmione. Hermioron? Whatever their couple name would’ve been. It physically hurt me reading "The Goblet of Fire" knowing that they just needed to get together and everything would be okay.
5. Staying on the topic of love, I wish that we could have enjoyed more of Harry and Ginny’s time together before he eventually had to end their relationship to fight off Voldemort
6. Only letting us (and the characters) know about Dumbledore’s past life after his death.
The whole time period after Dumbledore’s death was quite a crazy one. It was awful that he had to die when he was such an important character, but even more awful because we didn’t know his true feelings about his past. Harry had to find out everything about Dumbledore from Rita Skeeter, who didn’t paint the headmaster in the best light, and other sources. It left a hole in Harry’s heart as well as our own, and we wish Dumbledore could’ve stayed alive to tell his tales himself.
7. Two words: Fred Weasley.
This one really got me. Fred was by far one of the best characters, and Fred and George together was just the best combination. They were the characters that brought humor to the dark points in the novel and kept everyone smiling, especially the reader. It was almost as if you lost your own sibling when the death of Fred happened, and I really empathized with George. It was his other half that died, and I was pretty emotional for a while after reading through that part in the last novel. J.K Rowling actually tweeted on May 2, 2015 that she apologizes for killing Fred. I hope one day I can forgive her.
8. When Hermione erased herself out of her parents’ memories and sent them off to Australia.
I really felt for Hermione during this part, I can’t even imagine having parents that suddenly didn’t even know who I was. She did it to protect them, yes, but it must have been so painful. While Rowling didn’t really speak much about what Hermione had done in the novels, we did not forget. That particular part in the novel allowed Harry to see that she and Ron were really serious about joining him in the search for Voldemort’s Horcruxes and that they understood the severity of their mission.
9. When she recently tweeted about James Sirius Potter being sorted into Gryffindor, and we felt ALL the feels
Every time Rowling reveals something that wasn’t in the books I seriously lose my mind. Sept. 1, 2015, is when Harry’s next eldest son would be going off to Hogwarts, and the author made all of us go crazy by telling us that he was sorted into Gryffindor (!!!). Her fans are begging for another book, even ANYTHING written by the author, but nothing seems to be happening. We can only hope for a revealing tweet every once in a while from Rowling herself.
