After your first few days, or even hours, working in retail, you're introduced to a whole new world of what happens on the other side of shopping.

1. There's a lot more people working at one time than you may have thought before. There's people running registers, people on the floor, people in the back, security, and people you didn't even know worked there.

2. Listening to what's being said over the walkie at the same time you're trying to hold a conversation with a customer is actually really difficult. Retail is dependent on the walkie talkie. It's not like an all-store meeting can be called in the middle of a busy day.

3. Shoplifters are who you least expect them to be. Moms, boyfriends, grandpas, you name it. Whoever they are, they're stupid and annoying and should probably stop stealing all our merchandise.

4. You will see the non-unseeable while cleaning fitting rooms. Used pads, ABC sunflower seeds, boogers, you've seen it all.

5. We aren't just complimenting your outfit or hair or shoes because we're suck-ups, we actually like what we say we like. We were hired in part because of our outgoing personalities. We're not being insincere, we just thrive on human interaction.

6. It's really annoying when you put something on hold and never come back to claim it. Especially if it was the last one of that item. That's something we could have sold instead of having it sit behind the counter for hours.

7. We have our favorite customers. Of course, we appreciate most of you immensely, but there are a few customers who stand out and who we really connect with.

8. Our feet hurt. A lot. Retail is not a sitting type of job. You're on your feet for several hours a day. The only time you get to sit down is during your break, but chances are you'll be sitting in a crowded stock room eating a sandwich while standing up because there's a stack of shoe boxes piled on top of the only chair.

9. We're not trying to be annoying by asking if you need help every so often. We're doing it because that's our job, and if we don't do it, we aren't representing our store fairly. I know it gets annoying, but politely declining our help won't hurt our feelings. Interrupting us mid-sentence to sassily say you're 'just browsing,' kinda does. Be considerate, we're people too.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
