The Powerball lottery is at a record high of $900 million as of 9 Jan. 2016. This is an incredible amount of money (though there are two ways to gather that staggering amount, either way you won't be getting the full 900 million). If the winner decides to take the lump sum, which means they take their winnings up front when they bring the ticket in, they will only walk away with around $558 million, or 52% of the total jackpot.
That amount would further be broken up by taxes from the federal government of about 25%. Then there are local state taxes that can bring the amount down even more, leaving the winner with a still considerable fortune of $370 million. If you take it in annual payouts for the next thirty years, the dollar amount will be considerably higher. Either way, that is a staggering amount of money, especially to a broke college kid.
Either way everyone is talking about how they would use $900 million if they won the lottery. Here is my list:
1. Pay for college:
As a college kid, I think of money in terms of 'how much of my college tuition would that pay?' $900 million dollars would cover it with quite a bit left over (thank God I didn't go to a school that cost 60k+ a year!) I would be able to exit college with no loans and set myself up comfortably anywhere in the world when I'm done. And, not only would $900 million pay for my schooling, but my brother's as well.
2. Pay off my parent's bills:
I mean, why not? I have $900 million, my parents have paid for me for the past 18 years, I think they should get at least some of the money. With no debt maybe they could finally finish renovating the house how they wanted (paid for with the $900 million, of course). I might even get my own bathroom out of that deal!
3. Buy a car:
I want a small car that is dark purple. I have not decided if I want a brand new Volkswagen Passat or a Saab convertible. I could probably have both if I wanted. I could even buy my brother a car. He wants a 2016 Passat too.
4. Study abroad:
My school has lots of study abroad opportunities that I could take advantage of if I had that much money. I could go and study in Rome for six weeks like I want with no trouble at all. I could also travel all over Europe with that kind of money. I could take weekend trips to Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, London, Munich, Warsaw, and maybe I could even visit Reykjavik, Iceland on my way home. I love to travel, so I would be excited to explore Europe while still in college.
5. Take my grandmother on a riverboat cruise in France:
My grandmother went on a riverboat cruise a few years ago and has been dying to go again. But this time, she has no one to go with. With my $900 million dollars I could pay for the both of us, and have a kick butt time taking France by storm. Then after the riverboat cruise, we could travel Europe a little again, because it's Europe and I have the money, so why not?
6. Take my other grandparents to Italy:
My other grandparents are incredibly Italian and I think they would enjoy a trip to the bay of Naples and Rome. I would take my parents and brother as well, because the more the merrier. (My Grandpa would go straight to Naples because that's supposedly where our family is from.) They could go to vineyard and drink with my parents, and I would take them up Mount Vesuvius, and show they the beautiful view. It would be a fruitful trip for everyone.
7. I would give my parents enough money to retire:
I owe them a lot, and if they want to retire, I would have more than enough money for them to do that. I don't think that they would retire completely though. They are still fairly young and sitting at home would drive them insane. I would also have to give them money to do stuff with. Like buy a house in upstate New York, because for some reason, that's where my mom wants to get property. It would at least be pretty.
8. Buy a beach front property:
It's good business to have property and my parents would love having a beach house. It would be in Hilton Head, South Carolina because it is incredibly pretty down there and you can experience an actual ocean. Not Long Island Sound. I probably would not go there much, but my parents and my brother would certainly benefit.
9. Travel:
A vast amount of the $900 million would go to travel all over the world (extending outside of studying abroad). I love traveling, but it's expensive. However, cost would not matter too much if I won the Powerball jackpot. I do not know where I would go first, but I would be able to go and really immerse myself in the culture and do some good where it was needed. I would travel to every continent, and every other trip would be a part of a service project with an international organization. I would take trips to India, Russia, Rwanda, and Brazil. With all that money I could easily help people while helping those in need directly.
These are only some of the things I would do with $900 million. While I could come up with nine reasons, it is still an insane amount of money, and I cannot truly fathom how to spend so much currency.
