Hey, no one likes it when her roomie is upset! Sometimes it's just stress, but other times there's been a catastrophe--like her eyeliner is uneven. Whatever the problem is, here are 9 simple ways for you to lift your roommate's spirits!
1. Stock up on hot chocolate
Hot chocolate is perfect for those late night talks at three in the morning. The ones that happen right before your about to fall asleep, but your roomie rolls over and says, “can I talk to you?” Not only does it taste delicious, but it warms the senses and gives a general sense of calm within the body. If anything, when you don’t know what to say to your roommate, just fill your mouth with hot chocolate and nod your head
2. If hot chocolate doesn’t work, then try tea
Herbal teas are wonderful at being able to bring peace to someone. If your roomie isn’t really a hot chocolate type of person, try chamomile tea. This has soothing properties for the mind, body, and spirit and will certainly be able to show your roommate that you care about her.
3. Only ask “what’s wrong?” if you really want to know
Some people might respond “nothing”, while others will start to tell you a long-winded-story about their life. Either way, don’t inquire unless you actually want to know. You can be a helpful shoulder to cry on, or an understanding face to brighten the moment.
4. And if you really want to know, then be willing to listen
Don’t cut halfway into the story and offer your own advice about her situation unless she asks you to. Be willing to just sit there and listen to her free of judgement.
5. Always have something cozy in arm’s reach
Whether it’s a blanket, a stuffed animal, or even a pillow, we always feel better when snuggling something warm and soft. So, before the floods of tears begin to happen, give your roommate something to hold and bury her face into.
6. If needed, call for backup
Sometimes it’s as simple as a call from home or a text from a sibling that will brighten your roomie’s day. She may not think that she needs a call from Mom to make everything better, but hey, who doesn’t love the sound of Mom’s voice on the other end of the phone?
7. Tell her something stupid
Whether this is a story about that time you cut off your own bangs when you were five, or tripped on your high school graduation stage, she’ll appreciate the sentiment. Being able to make her laugh is the easiest way for you to give some comfort.
8. Don’t be shy with your hugs
Show your roommate that you care about her feelings. You may not be able to do anything to help her, but you can at least hold her and tell her everything will be alright.
9. Let her know that she is more than just a roommate
