9 Things That I Love/Hate About College

1. Being Away From My Parents

On one hand, being away from my parents gives me a sense of freedom. In college, you get to make your own decisions and be your own person. It's good to not have someone constantly on your back saying things like, "Did you do your homework?", "What time did you go to bed last night Get up. No, you don't have time to sleep five more minutes.", or "Clean your room. It looks like a pig sty. Do you think I'm your maid?"

On the other hand, I miss my parents, and all of those things they constantly asked me. The saying "You don't know a good thing 'till it's gone", has never been more true. Not finishing homework, staying up 'till three in the morning, and living in a pig sty helps us to see just how important our parents really are in our lives. They keep us on track. I usually end up calling or texting my parents at least more than once a day.

2. Classes

We should love our classes, because they're what brought us to college in the first place.

The great thing about college classes is that we get to pick and choose what days, what time, and what teachers we have for our classes. You can choose to start your day at noon or end your day at noon. Another great thing about college classes is that since you don't go to the same class everyday, you have two days rather than one to complete your assignments. Also, most college classes pertain to your specific major, which means that they're about topics that you actually like and will actually use in life.

Although college classes are better than high school classes, they're still classes, and they still require homework...which is mostly reading.

3. My Dorm Room

Dorm rooms are exciting, because you can finally decorate your "home" the way that you want to. It's a cozy place to call your own. Another great thing about dorm rooms are that they are literally a five minute or less walk away from your classes, food, and everything else that you need. If you get cold and want to go home and grab a sweater, you can in only a few minutes.

However, they do have their downsides. They look a lot bigger on the school's website. You have to squeeze your stuff in and in some cases you have to send stuff back home with mom and dad. You have to live in a 12 x 12 area with another person. Even if you like that person, it can still be a struggle. Also, the walls are paper thin. On the third floor, you can hear the girls of the first floor with your door closed. You can also hear cars driving around in the parking lot with their music blaring, which is sometimes actually not so bad, though. Also, the temperature in dorm rooms are either walk-in freezer or blazing oven, there's no in between.

4. The Caf

The caf is great, because you pay with your school ID instead of actually handing over money.

But, it is still cafeteria food... so enough said.

5. Wifi

Free wifi is always great, because NETFLIX. I don't have unlimited wifi at home, so having unlimited wifi here is awesome.

College wifi can be slow at times, though, due to all of the people who are using it at the same time.

6. Meeting New People

I have met so many people in college that are now my lifelong best friends. College has brought me so many amazing friendships as well as a sisterhood, that I would not trade for the world.

However, I tend to be shy when meeting new people. So, it is a little difficult at first for me to make friends in my classes.

7. Living In A New Town

I love how many new and exciting things there are to do in a college town. I come from a really small town where the most exciting thing to do is drag main or walk around Walmart. Also, my hometown only has about 5 restaurants and 4 fast food places. College towns have tons of fast food places, as well as better restaurants.

On the other hand, new towns can be difficult. I, for one, am terrible with directions, so at first I got lost A LOT. Also, just getting used to a new town can take a while. The Walmart is set up totally different, and there are traffic lights every 100 feet throughout town.

8. Summer Breaks

Summer Breaks are great, because you get to go home and see your family, significant other, and old friends from high school. Also, you don't have to do as much homework (unless you're taking online summer classes). You get to sleep in your old room again, where the bed is probably a lot more comfortable. You get to spend the whole summer with your pets!

However, you have to go a whole summer without seeing your new friends from college. You also start to miss the things about your college town that you got used to while being there.

9. The Length Of Time It Takes To Get A Degree

Four years seems like a short time in some ways and a long time in some ways. You have to do school work for four more years, but you only get to be at this new University that has now become home for four short years.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
