9 Things that I Won't Miss About Living in the Dorms

Dorm life is nice, but I can't wait to live off-campus

9 Things that I Won't Miss About Living in the Dorms
Kinga Cichewicz

A couple of weeks ago, I signed a lease for an apartment, and as someone who has lived in the same dorm for the past two years, I'm ready for a change. I love my dorm, as a second year in a dorm of mostly first years, there are some things they do that bother me to no end. Here are the nine things that I won't miss about it.

1. Upstairs Neighbors

I recently found out the hard way that I live below a drum player. Three hours of listening to someone play the drums through the ceiling is enough to drive anyone mad. Even if it's not something that loud, the floors aren't very sound proof, and every time a piece of furniture is moved, I can hear it. I'm ready to only have my roommates living above me, if anybody.

2. College Tour Groups

Tour groups pass through the courtyard behind my dorm, and I can hear the faint yelling of the tour guide trying to convince them that Ohio State is the college for them. I won't miss the faint descriptions of the dorm that I'm sitting in.

3. Dining Hall Food

Only having so many places to eat and not many options to choose from when ordering gets old fast. I'm ready to not completely depend on someone to provide anything that I wanted to eat.

4. No Kitchen

Not only can I only eat food from the dining halls, I'm in one of the few dorms that doesn't even have a communal kitchen. I can't wait until I have a more than a microwave and fridge, but a real kitchen in my apartment.

5. Communal Bathrooms

You have to share two showers and two toilets with about 20 random people, and you have to deal with all of their hygiene practices that might be completely different than yours. Sure, I'll have to clean my own bathroom next year, but at least I'll be able to count on one hand how many people are using it.

6. Parking Passes

While Ohio State will sell you a parking pass during your second year, is it really worth it? It's a ton of money, and I don't drive to downtown; I take the bus. Not only do I not have to buy a parking pass, but it's not even street parking. I'm moving up in the parking world.

7. Freshman Partying Thursday- Sunday

Ah, freshman, so young and unaware of the fact that they're screaming over their loud music because they're drunk. I won't miss the people who don't remember that other people live near them, and I really won't miss the groups of guys that stand in the hallway because for some reason they can't go in the girl's room that they're hanging out with.

8. Sharing a Room

I love my roommate and we get along great, but there is something so nice about being able to have space for yourself and some alone time.

9. Laundry

Not only will I not have to pay for my laundry next year, there's a washer and dryer in the apartment. Long gone will the days of having to choose between waiting for people to get their clothes when their machine is done and throwing their clothes out and hoping that they don't show up while I'm doing it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
