9 Things I Learned My First Year Of College

It's been good, freshman year.

9 Things I Learned My First Year Of College
Kyndal Goss

As finals week is coming to an end (thank god), I am thinking about how much has changed in a year. This time a year ago, I was still in high school, counting down the days until graduation. This time a year ago, I was so scared about starting college, and in the blink of an eye, my first year has already come to an end. I've learned so much my first year of college, and I can only imagine how much more I'll learn in the years to come. Here are some things I've learned during my first year of college:

1. The value of naps.

I never wanted to take naps before I started college, but now they are an everyday thing. There have been days when I have chosen to sleep instead of eat, and that's saying a lot. Whether it's a quick nap in between classes or a three-hour nap in the middle of the day, it makes a huge difference.

2. Coffee has become its own food group.

Before I started college, I would only drink girly Starbucks drinks, just because. Now, if I don't have it, then the day ain't happenin'.

3. The freshman 15 is real.

The first week of school, I was eating cake for every meal. Add that to stress eating, and you've got that +15 real quick.

4. You still don't miss high school.

Yeah, college may be stressful at times, but I would choose it over high school any day.

5. You actually have to study.

This was probably the biggest thing I had to adapt to. In high school, I was a "look over the night before" kind of girl. But that's not how it works in college.

6. You meet some of your best friends in college.

I've been so blessed to meet such awesome people this year. I made more friends this year than I ever have. From study buddies, to work friends, to people from hours away whom I never thought I'd meet, I am so thankful for my friends.

7. Weird traditions that are only normal to college kids.

From Taco Bell runs for study breaks, to sketchy Waffle House visits late at night, to eating pizza going down the road, you're weird if you don't do it.

8. It's totally acceptable to go to class in your pajamas.

Yeah, you can do it whenever, but in college, you won't get judged for it because everyone around you looks like a slob too.

9. It really is the best time of your life.

College is so different than what I expected in the greatest ways. A lot has changed in a year, and it has gone by so fast. I can't wait to see how many new people I meet and how much more I learn in the next three years. It's been good, freshman year.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
