9 Things I Learned My First Semester In College

College is exactly what I expected. Everything you're supposed to do, you do by yourself. You don't have Mom or Dad texting you saying, "It's 11:30, why aren't you home yet?" Throughout the summer before college you spend every waking moment soaking it in with friends and family you will soon be separated from. Those last dinners and goodbyes were hard, but I didn't realize how much harder it can be to grow up within a matter of weeks.

College has already taught me so much about myself and it's just the beginning. It hit me like a ton of bricks -- all at once. It is easy for me to say, now, that not much could've prepared me for what college really is. I have learned more life lessons in a matter of four months than I have my whole life. So, here are some of the lessons college has taught me.

1. Your family and friends aren't going anywhere.

The saying, "distance means so little when someone means so much," is completely true. They will still be there for you when it comes time for fall and winter breaks. FaceTime is the key to these relationships.

2. I learned it's OK to not get straight As.

The world isn't going to end if you don't.

3. Naps are a real key to happiness.

4. I am 100 percent responsible for my education.

No one is on my back reminding me to do my paper, or study for my tests. Professors don't care if you forget a deadline; it's one less assignment for them to grade.

5. Coffee makes the world go round.

6. Dorm food is dorm food and there's not much you can do about it.

Missing mom's home cooked meals is at an all time high.

7. All of a sudden, 18 is the magic number.

You are an adult, now, and you get to make all your own decisions -- going out or studying is the biggest question. And to be honest, you need a little bit of both.

8. No matter how overwhelmed you may be, you're not alone.

Studying for finals is draining and 1,000 word essays suck, but everyone's doing it. Find friends and complain about it together.

9. Most of all, college is a huge stepping stone in life.

It's where you develop into the person you want to be. You're no longer stuck in a high school clique or a part of close-knit club or team...you're an adult. College is as close as it can get to the 'real world' while still getting an education and you can make it exactly what you want it to be. No one is holding you back.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
