Spring is nearly upon us, and that can only mean one thing: you are expected to know what you are doing this summer. Specifically, this is the time to be applying to internships that will provide experience and bolster your resume. With most internships targeted towards college students, the search for one could not be more stressful. Here are the nine stages of struggling to get a summer internship, as told by the cast of “Friends.”
1. Feeling pressured to start the internship search because you hear all your friends talk about what they are applying to.
All your friends are starting applications? Time to start the internship search.
2. The realization that you are unqualified for nearly everything.
3. Everything is also unpaid.
To gain experience, or make money? That is the question.
4. You discover jobs you never knew existed.
... but out of desperation, you apply for them anyways.
5. The enormous rise in your stress levels from finishing endless applications, cover letters, and writing samples.
You could fulfill credits for another class with the time commitment of applications and cover letters.6. New levels of stress about hearing back from the employer.
When will they email me? Should I follow up? Does that seem too eager? Has anyone else heard back?
7. Deflecting the insufferable questions about what you are doing with your life.
No, I still do not have a plan, and yes, I become more stressed each time you ask.
8. Getting an interview feels like winning the lottery.
Finally! Now try to calm down before the interview.
9. Whatever this summer holds, you are ready to take it head-on.
If you got the internship, yay! If you'll be working at the minimum wage job you thought you'd seen the last of in high school, at least you'll be getting paid.
