Brace yourself, reality is coming

Nine Lies We Tell Ourselves During The Holidays

As we go through the holiday season, it is easy for certain lies to become our reality. Because we are so concerned about changing ourselves, or having the best holiday experiences, we get caught up in what we want to happen. Here are some lies we often believe to be true during the holiday season:

I will workout after dinner. Although, afterwards, you may feel so full that working out seems like a very good idea, it is highly unlikely that you will have the motivation to go to the gym or go on a run while the rest of the family is watching their favorite holiday movies. Instead of making this breakable promise to yourself, make an effort to workout in the morning while everyone else is waking up. This way, you won’t feel as if you are missing out on the excitement. If a morning run does not seem likely, invite some family members to go on a walk after your meal to burn off a few extra calories before dessert.

I will just taste some of the dishes on the table. Of course, we would love to actually do this, but by the first two or three dishes that we come across, our plate has magically filled up and each dish we taste gets better and better. Why stop? If you decide to only take small amounts of each dish then you won’t end up overeating by going back for large portioned seconds. You will be able to taste all that is available without getting extra full.

I will make it my New Year's resolution. I am a horrible procrastinator; putting off things is my area of expertise. But when it comes to making healthy choices, I know that if you make these lifestyle choices, you won’t feel the need to actually complete them. Saying you’ll start eating healthy later will make it harder than if you start as soon as possible.

I am going to lose weight next year. Goals or resolutions like this one are not going to be achieved if we don’t make it a lifestyle change. Saying you want to lose weight later, but indulging now, is not a healthy way to approach aspects in your life that you want to change and will only cause you to become depressed. Make small changes now, and a goal you can work toward for the future.

The holidays are not the holidays without the one you love. Sometimes, the holidays can feel lonely. Maybe your significant other is home with his or her parents, this year, or work is just too busy and making it home isn’t possible. Face Time and doing something for yourself this season is a great way direct your mind away from lonely thoughts.

I cannot have a good time without having the perfect night. It seems like everyone I know has plans for a spectacular New Year's Eve. Watching the ball drop in Times Square, going to a killer party, or even having a movie night with their boyfriend. But if you are staying home this New Year's Eve, or your spending it with your family, you can have just as good of a time. Sometimes, when we envision a night to remember, it doesn’t actually turn out the way we want it and we are left disappointed. This New Year's Eve try to be optimistic and don’t have too high expectations; that way whatever happens will be unforgettable.

It does not feel like Christmas unless it is cold and snowy. I think we all know this one isn’t true, especially for the people who live way down south and never get snow. Although everyone wants to experience a white holiday season, sometimes that is not possible and a sunny hot break at the beach is just as awesome!

You will give or receive the perfect gift from your significant other this holiday. The older you get, you realize you will have to lower your expectations, or specify your Christmas list, because no one can read your mind. If you want someone to get you something specific, then tell them; don't expect them to know what you want without a clue. Just be happy that the people giving you gifts thought of you.

I am going to make holiday dishes the same way Grandma did. When you finally get your mother's or grandmother's recipes, you think that you are going to make all the holiday dishes the way they made them, and they are sure to taste the exact same. Unfortunately, they never turn out right. But trust me when I say this, the holiday season is for you to make it special, and that includes all the meals and desserts. Don’t stress to hard about getting something to turn out perfectly because you will only end up feeling like what you made isn’t good enough when, really, it's just different.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
