After over two weeks of intense training as a Resident Assistant, I have learned quite an amount of information. I know how to successfully go through Oak Summit, how t adhere to all the policies, and how to work on a few hours of sleep each day.
One of the most vital parts of RAing is the decorating, as each hall that an RA is assigned is to be decorated completely, to create community and a sense of home. Here are the 9 super strategies to successfully complete your first hall as an RA.
1. Pick a theme that you are passionate about.
The first step to a happy hall is a great theme! You're not gonna want to do all your hard work if you don't love your theme. I chose my theme, Avatar the Last Airbender, because I love the show, and there was a lot of ideas to branch off of. As long as you love your theme, and you have ideas from that, you're in great shape!
2. Blockposters!
What are block posters you ask? They are your lifeline, especially if you live in a long hall. Blockposters.com is tool to use, where you can upload a super awesome high resolution picture and print it out and tape it together like a puzzle. It looks great on the wall, and great for less artistic people as well.
3. Double sided tape
Omg this is a must! Posters, block posters, crafts, or any other material needs to be taped, and the easiest use is double sided scotch tape. You can just slab it on and call it a day.
4. Think back to elementary school
It is best to make your hall look as childish and cute as possible. Bring all the arts and crafts, because home truly starts with how young you are, and the cuter the hall, the more likely the residents will belong to a close community.
5. Creativity is hidden within you.
When you become an RA, you will discover that you are more creative than you once thought. Think about your theme and how you can use it to your advantage.
6. Make the most out of your hall
Especially for places like Oak Summit, there is a lot of wall space. Make the most of it, and cover enough. You'll be satisfied knowing how much hardwork you put into it.
7. Use your resources!
Stuff to create is all around you! I used a red blindfold to cut out fire decorations. You'll be surprised what's around you.
8. There is a staff that you can lean on.
When the decorating gets stressful, go with the staff and bond. This type of family can really be helpful when the going gets tough. You all have dealt with similar struggles, and at the end of the day, they are the support you need.
9. Be proud
You made this! This is all you and you should be proud of all your hard work! No matter what anyone says, you went out of your comfort zone and made something special. Go you!
