8 things you can do to keep yourself sane during quarantine

Whatever you do, please don't spend all of your time in quarantine on your phone, watching the news, and building up panic in your mind.

Honestly, it's not healthy for you, and anyone around you. (Oh wait, you'll be alone. haha!)

If you do end up getting quarantined, you can look at it two ways:

  1. You can see this as the worst thing to ever happen to you
  2. You can see this as a fun opportunity to spend time alone, practice a hobby, read, write, or reconnect with people you've lost touch with.

It doesn't have to be so bad! I just spoke to a friend Elijah in quarantine and he was smiling and laughing. "This is great!" He had told me, "I get my food delivered right to my bedroom door. Even better than Uber eats!" He joked.

Let's all try to stay calm and be like Elijah, shall we?

Here are 10 thing you can do during quarantine to keep yourself sane:

Get Fit AF

Giphy

14 days is a good amount of time. While you might not get ripped during this time, we could try right? Especially if you're stuck in your room, you'll want to make sure you still get the heart rate up and the endorphins pumping to keep yourself feeling happy and healthy. Thanks to technology and the internet, there are plenty of awesome ways to exercise online.

Some of my favorite yoga apps are Sattva Connect, Glo, BeHot at Home, Gaia, and Corepower, to name a few. But kid you not, there are literally hundreds of different ways you could do this.

Apps, youtube videos, or hey just get creative and create a workout routine of your own.

Run in place, practice handstands, or give breathwork a try. There are heaps of ways for you to get the heart racing and endorphins releasing.

Learn a new language

Giphy

Maybe there's a language you've always wanted to learn? You're just in luck! Two weeks is a solid chunk of time to become conversational in a language.

You can check out a learning program such as Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone (for the really devoted student), or you can also just mess around on some free language apps such as DuoLingo.

Binge Watch Elite

Giphy

This is my favorite series on Netflix of all time. Also, you can practice your Spanish since it's originally filmed in Spanish and you can add English subtitles.

Meditate

Giphy

Take this time of required stillness to be… still. Meditation doesn't have to be 'hard' or 'challenging'. I often hear people say that 'they can't meditate because they can't stop thinking'. Guess what? The nature of the mind is to think! And it's normal to think in meditation. The goal of meditation is not to stop thinking. The goal of meditation is simply to sit, with the eyes closed, and observe your thinking. Meditation is a huge opportunity for us to observe the nature of our minds and figure out what's really going on in there.

What are the stories we replay in our minds? What are the things we tell ourselves in our head? What do our thoughts consist of?

Most people just move about in their lives and have no clue what's occupying their minds. But when we can begin to observe what's going on in our heads, is when we become a mastermind. (Get it? We master our minds).

Yoga

Giphy

If you don't have the funds to purchase an online yoga app or subscription, there are heaps of people right now who are offering free yoga classes on Instagram & Facebook live. Even I have been offering them for fun! (Check it out, at @brookenally).

What better thing to do when locked inside than stretch your body, breathe, and work up a sweat?

Cook delicious foods

Giphy

Sure, some of you have the luxury of simply ordering Uber Eats food directly to your door or getting Amazon Prime groceries delivered within the same day, but that's taking away the opportunity to improve your cooking skills and have fun in the kitchen!

Not only is cooking your own food so much healthier for you, (have you ever heard of made with love?), but it's fun, too!

Yesterday, my sister and I made this absolutely delicious sweet potato bread. Cooking together is something she and I have never done together before, so not only was this an opportunity to make delicious food, but it gave us an opportunity to bond in a new way.

Rearrange your home

Giphy

Since you'll be spending a lot of time at home, you might as well make it as comfortable as possible. If your home doesn't already feel like a sanctuary, you'll find it difficult to relax and feel at peace. Here is a great article with some tips to make your home more of a sanctuary.

Dance

Giphy

If you start to feel bored, tired, or stuck, the best thing you can do is to DANCE! If you need a song recommendation to get you grooving, I suggest "staying alive" by the Beegees. It's a pretty ironic song to be honest considering what the world is going through, but it's funky tune will definitely get you in the dancing mood!

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
