Writing is no easy feat. It can be frustrating the same way spreading cold butter on bread is frustrating. There is butter on the bread, just not at all the way you wanted it to be. Plus, sometimes it can just be a downright mess of bread.
When you're in a class discussion and someone brings up the point you wanted to say.
Writing new, refreshing content isn’t easy when millions of other writers are trying to do the same thing. I’m sure you think you’re an ingenious, exceptional writer, which you probably are, but you’re not the only one. It makes writing a challenge that you’re not always confident in accepting. It’s hard thinking of an article that hasn’t already been written, a topic that hasn’t been explored, and a gif that hasn’t been used.
When you miss the prime opportunity to say something funny in the group chat.
A perk of writing is you can do it on a dime, which is basically a requirement if you’re a reporter or journalist. This means you have to stay on top of what’s going on and act on it. If you don’t, you’ll miss out and be left thinking, well now what do I write about…
When you forget why you went into to your room.
Sometimes ideas can come to you faster than Google can deliver their results. With that, it’s really important to be able to write your thoughts down as soon as you can or you’ll forget. Maybe you won’t forget all of it, but if you’re like me, you’ll only remember the most irrelevant part of your idea.
When the seatbelt is stuck and you're sitting there super restrained.
It’s not that writing feels like you’re trapped, but when you can’t think of anything to write, you just get so frustrated. You sit there like, "WHY ME?!" It doesn’t matter if you’re working on a tight deadline, having to do something and not being able to is wildly aggravating.
When you can't figure out the answer to a math problem you've tried solving 8 different ways.
Let’s say you have an idea of what you want to write about, but not enough of an idea to actually write a full article. You re-write the first paragraph more times than you can keep track of and it’s just not working. It’s not coming out the way you want at all, which ultimately leaves you stuck.
When you try on a dress that looked 10/10 on the hanger but looks like a 3/10 on you.
You have a kickass idea and you are amped about it. You run to your computer or whip out a notebook and let your thoughts bleed out. You finish and read over it only to realize that it honestly sucks. It was a good idea in retrospect, but it just didn’t translate the way you thought it would.
When you're playing an aggressive game of phone tag to find someone at a party.
It’s easy to get sidetracked when you’re writing, so easy that you can even forget your original point. This leaves you frustrated that you got so distracted, but all you can do is to try and regain your focus.
When you're in line for a roller coaster and the wait is lasting years.
It’s easy to lose patience when you can’t think of anything to write, but it’s almost as if it’s out of your hands at that point. Your best option is to wait until something comes to you.
As much as writer's block is discouraging, nothing feels better than overcoming it.
