Eight Things To Do While Counting Down To Fall Semester

We're only a few weeks into summer, but with no classes, meetings, or social events occupying our time, boredom will quickly set in. Summer is hot. The days are lazy, slow, and full of time to spare, so while you're counting down the days until you're back on campus with 25,000 of your closest friends, here are some ways to stay busy... and maybe even have a productive summer.

1. Organize your life.

While classes are in session, life can get a bit crazy... or really crazy. The number one focus is school and school-related activities, so other parts of your life get pushed to the back of the closet. Now you have three months to organize, clean, and catch up on things you've missed while being a dedicated college student.

2. Start a new hobby or delve deep into a current one.

My latest hobby is coloring adult coloring books (yes, I said adult coloring books, and no they are not graphic). There's reading, coloring, crafting, playing an instrument, working out, etc. Take your pick.

3. Volunteer

Personally, I love volunteering. It's a great way to pass time. You give back to the community while gaining experience with some sort of organization. Yea, you don't get paid, but it's definitely worth it to volunteer to play with puppies at the local animal shelter or feed the homeless.

4. Visit your cities local botanical garden or park.

In Athens we're lucky because our city is home to the beautiful state botanical gardens, but if you're home for the summer, check out your local botanical garden or city park. They can be a little tricky to track down, but most cities have one. These are the hidden gems in your city. If you're looking to relax and don't want to spend money, this a great option.

5. Speaking of gardens...why not start your own!

Gardening is a hobby for focused, dedicated people who want to see the fruits of the labor and give back to their planet. It is a bit demanding, but the start up for a garden isn't expensive (you already have dirt and water) and it's a great way to relax too.

6. Take a random road trip.

If you're sitting around during a boring Tuesday morning and actually want to do something, do it! Grab a few of your friends and go exploring. Whether your road trip takes you somewhere in your town, somewhere a few towns over, or maybe even to the beach, spontaneous trips are often the best trips! Pack some food, water, and your closet friends into the car, and you're off.

7. Clean out your phone.

Yes, I said your phone. I'm talking about the 5,000 photos you have that are all sooooo important. Save them on your laptop. Print them. Delete them. Do something. And delete all the apps you never use while you're at it.

8. Get a head start on your fall classes.

Yes, it's summer. I understand. But, it's not hard, or time consuming to figure out who your teachers are for next semester, read over the syllabus, purchase your necessary books, and maybe get a head start on the reading. Let's face it, we're all behind on our readings before the first day of class even starts... that's college for you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
