Holidays are great. Going home, break from work seeing family. Except when you are in college there is a certain amount of stress to that last one. Especially when you are majoring in something like Theatre, Dance or Tech Theatre. Most of your immediate family has learned not to ask these questions but your extended family always feels the need to chime in with their two cents about what you study and what they think of it
So here are 10 questions that Performance or Tech Majors are Tired of Hearing:
1. So do you do any real school work?
Oh you mean spending hours in dance or design studios perfecting our final projects isn’t real work? Well if you don’t consider that real work how about the long hours we spend working on Theatre History or Acting or Dance papers (Yes I do in fact have to write papers for Acting and Dance). Or how about the work designers put into designing a house that can fit on a stage and not kill your fellow students?

2. With no real classes how much free time do you have?
What is this free time you speak of? Between my classes for my BFA/BA and my general education requirements (or as you call them “real classes”), I also have studying and homework to do, as well has choreography pieces to work on, lines to memorize and rehearsals to get to. I don’t know what free time is anymore.
3. How are you still single?
“There are 30+ cute girls in your production” or “What about all those cute male builders?” Okay first off we spend almost all of our time with these people. They are our closest friends. Just like anything else this doesn’t mean I am going to madly fall in love with someone while working with them. Also not all of the tech majors (not builders) are male there are a lot of female tech majors (and no they are not all butch lesbians). How is your love life going?
4. What do you plan on doing with your degree?

Working in theatre and dance? This question is literally the worst thing anyone can say to any major ever especially those in art or theatre major. We have heard it all. We know. Stop.
5. Do you plan on being a professional waiter?
You ask this I’m just going to stare at you. No I do not plan on being a professional waiter see Question Four.
6. Do you know what the cost of living is?
Yes I’m aware and I’m aware it’s hard to make money but I’m doing what I love and won’t be miserable in a nine-five job I don’t want to be at. I have a passion that I am actively working in.
7. How do you plan on paying off your debt?
Don’t ask any college students this question. Sometimes it’s enough to make us want to drink an entire bottle of Pepto-Bismol (or liquor) and forget our troubles.
8. Okay, how much work is your major really?
A lot. We always take more than 15 credits a semester and that’s before I try to fit general ed classes in. We create full characters or dance pieces on stage then put them in front of people who criticize them. Then we stress about how to fix. Then we go to rehearsals where we work to create a different piece while not letting the stress of a very long day affect us. We get home at 10 PM and have the internal battle over whether we finish our homework or go to sleep. We do all of this because we are passionate about sharing art and the human experience with others.
