8 Things Marist College Seniors Remember From Freshman Year
Marist College

Time flies when you're having fun! Looking back on freshman year, you realize not only have you changed as a person, but you realize how much Marist has changed, as well. After stalking your own "Don't Fox With Us" or "Oh You Foxy, Huh?" freshman year albums, it's safe to say that many of us peaked at this time. Why don't we rewind three and a half years back and reminisce on some bittersweet memories?

1. Backstreet.

A.k.a., Blackstreet. The epitome of our Friday nights (and Tuesday mug nights) where all you tasted in the air was sweat and beer. It didn’t matter though because the throwback music was nothing short of amazing. No matter how much we complained about the lack of air conditioning, we sucked it up and rallied throughout the night.

2. When the music building was under construction.

Who could forget waking up to 7 a.m. construction? Music to our ears. We can’t deny that it wasn’t worth it, though. The addition of the two new entrances to the rotunda is truly a beautiful thing.

3. When you couldn’t avoid anyone in the dining hall.

Remember when the dining hall looked like a middle school cafeteria? As freshmen, we were stuck in the middle of the Hogwarts renovation. You couldn’t find seating anywhere, especially during prime time. The lack of an open floor plan forced us to circle around the entire caf just to get on the sub or sandwich line. You couldn’t avoid anyone if you tried… ever.

4. Soft serve ice cream.

Mmm, that's good good. Even though the machine broke down almost five times a day, there was nothing more satisfying than choosing between vanilla, chocolate or swirl topped with sprinkles and chocolate chips. Why did Marist have to take this college delicacy away from us!?

5. The f**k bucket days.

Oh, O’Malley’s -- one of Marist’s most ratchet freshman bars of all time. You weren’t completely satisfied until you were blacked out or ordered the famous f**k bucket. After freshman year, we continued on to bigger and better things (Darby’s) and left O’Malley’s to rebrand itself as Hyde Bar.

6. Barstool foam night.

What a night that was. The foam was fun -- until it stung your eyes. Quickly after that, you started to drown in the white tsunami. The goal was to dance on stage for the infamous barstool video. It wasn’t a true Barstool Blackout night unless girls were kissing each other for the camera: “Look, Mom and Dad, I’m a star!”

7. Red Fox rumble.

Back where it all began. August 26, 2012: A day that will live in infamy. Tensions rose high as students competed in tug-of-war, wheelbarrow races and beyond. I will unfortunately admit in this article that I was the girl that flew across the field during the dizzy bat contest. What a great first impression, am I right?

8. When Marist was your second home.

And it will be for the next three months (and forever in our hearts). Even though it’s the end of the beginning, it’s also the beginning of the end. We may be intimidated in the real world after graduation, but we can’t forget where we started. This school is more than a college, it’s a community. And we are thankful of what this school has done for us. We love you, Marist College!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
