We have all heard the phrase "don't go to graduate school, you'll end up living in the basement of your parent's house," and while this might be true, it is not true for everyone. Some people go to graduate school and become experts in their field, they become professors, doctors, or lawyers.
It is not in our hands to judge those that choose the graduate school path. However, in my article, I will list alternative options to students that don't necessarily see themselves going to graduate school. Below are the eight things you can do instead of going to graduate school!
1. Get a job
Instead of going to graduate school, you can obviously get a job and kick-start your career.
2. Join Peace Corps
If you like volunteering or making a change then joining Peace Corps can be a good option for you and something you can do instead of going to graduate school.
3. Travel the world
With all the money you'll be saving by not choosing to attend graduate school, you might as well book a flight to France or some exotic island like Bora Bora. Enjoy yourself, while you're young and healthy.
4. Relax
Based on what my professors have told me about their graduate school experience, they have said it was pretty intense and stressful. If you don't choose the graduate school path, then you can simply sit back and relax.
5. Write a book
Even though, you can also write a book while in graduate school, you will probably have more time to write a book if you aren't in graduate school.
6. Start a family
Just like the previous point, starting a family is not limited to those that choose not to go to graduate school. Obviously, you can attend graduate school and still start a family, however, it is easier to start a family when you are not in school.
7. Pay off your debt
Whether that means college debt from your undergraduate studies, or any other debt really, instead of going to graduate school, you can start paying off your debt.
8. Laugh at your peers that chose the graduate school path
Just kidding, instead of laughing at them, encourage them to stay strong while in graduate school and be supportive of their decision.
In the end, whether or not you go to graduate school is your choice. Some people are very successful with taking that path, while others are not. Do what you love, and love what you do, that is what will get you far in life.
