The joys and downfalls of having a little sister.

8 Things Every Big Sister Understands

When my sister and I were growing up I never could have imagined the relationship we have now. We constantly fought, yes we loved each other, but it was a constant battle. And I guess in some ways our relationship is still like that but now it is more of a friendship. Mary Connor and I are three years apart and different in so many ways. My sister is very athletic while I am quite the opposite. She is tall and muscular while I am short and well not. This year, driving my little freshman sister to school, has been the biggest blessing. We have grown so close and I am indescribably thankful for my built in best friend. If you have a little sister, I think we can both agree on these things.

1. Your closet is her closet, no questions asked.

I used to hate that my sister was constantly borrowing my clothes, OK maybe I still do. Especially this year, mornings before school usually involve her asking to borrow something. I can't count the number of times I've noticed her wearing my clothes, when she definitely didn't ask. Unfortunately, she usually looks ten times better in them.

2. The best part of car rides with each other is the jam sessions.

I have never driven my little sister around as much as I have this year. I find myself offering to give her rides and pick her up (what?!). It's not that I enjoy wasting my gas to go get her; it's the jam sessions we get to enjoy together. We prefer rap but honestly any song we both know is fun to listen to together. It's the best part of the day: driving to school and singing and dancing to our favorite Drake song.

3. She is the ultimate helper.

I can't count the number of times I've texted her asking for some toilet paper. And she always pulls through. Remember you don't have any shampoo left...once you're already in the shower? Just give her a shout. There's not telling how many things that kid has opened for me. Thanks MC, you're a lifesaver.

4. Y'all are a team.

Sorry Mom and Dad, but we all know sisters are supposed to stand up for each other, whether that be in front of y'all or behind closed doors. We may have gotten ourselves in more trouble but sometimes you have to argue for your sis. Mary Connor is good about reminding me to just say "yes sir" even when I want to scream at the top of my lungs. She's saved me a lot of punishments.

5. You can make fun of her, but no one else can.

I am the big sister that wants to fight anyone that does her wrong. A girl was mean to you today? Tell me her name, I'll confront her. I will hold a grudge for years against someone if they have hurt her. I still dislike people to this day that were mean, even though she might have forgiven them. At the same time, I'm probably the meanest to her, but she throws it right back.

6. You are each other's worst judge.

My little sister is the one I go to when I need some honesty and sometimes I don't even ask for it. We ask each other about outfit decisions and can know that the other will be up front about it. Thanks MC for telling me I looked bad in that dress. Or that I was overthinking a text from a boy.

7. She is your live-in photographer.

My little sister knows all my best angles. She knows what kind of lighting I like without me having to tell her. And she's the one out of the family that doesn't mind taking a few hundred pics to get the perfect Instagram. It all evens out when I edit and caption all of hers.

8. You are each other's best friend.

On the days when I feel abandoned my all my friends my own age I know I can turn to her. She is my encouragement and my counselor and the one person I know I can 100% trust. Thank you God for giving me my little sister.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
