8 Things You Didn't Realize You Missed About Home While In College
Kristine Byrum

Going back to college is always an exciting time of year. You are finally free to spend your time however you want without your parents constantly checking on your every move. And while it is always nice to have your space to be free to do whatever you want, no matter how old and "grown up" we get, there will always be things we miss about the comforts of home. This time of year at the onset of the holiday season has been and always will be my favorite time. Coming home from long weeks away at school to a familiar home and a welcoming family is always just what I need to de-stress from the pressures of homework, midterms, papers, and projects. Aside from just missing the comfort of my own bed, there are so many things I never realized I missed from home when I'm away at school.

1. Having a Stocked Fridge and Food Cabinet

While at school it's easy to forget what it's like to have a variety of food choices in the pantry. All of a sudden you have a choice of a several kinds of cereal, you finally have eggs and bread at your disposal, and if you're lucky the freezer includes a tub of ice cream. Not to mention, you finally have a stove at your convenience to make non-microwavable meals that you have now become so used to. It's safe to say you'll definitely miss the surplus of food when you go back to school.

2. Reliable Wi-Fi Connection

Home is where the wi-fi connects automatically, right? Home is finally a place where you don't constantly get kicked off the server and you don't have to keep signing in with your email and password. Definitely, a luxury that is not present at school.

3. The Water Pressure of your Shower

Who knew you could miss your showerhead at home until you experience the showers at college. Especially for girls who have a lot of hair, the water pressure in the school showers hardly wets it enough for the shampoo to work. It's not until you come home and shower in your own bathroom that you remember what it was like to have the comfort of a strong water pressure and now you'll never forget to be thankful for it.

4. Free Laundry

You'll never forget to thank your mom for doing your laundry anymore, especially when she'll do it completely for free.

5. Unlimited Supply of Silverware

It's so nice to be home and opening the silverware drawer and having a spoon and a fork available. At school, the number of silverware is not only extremely limited, but it always seems to be dirty from its adventure in the ice cream carton the previous night.

6. Quality Toilet Paper

The 1 Ply toilet paper at school will never be a match for the Charmin Ultrastrong at home.

7. TV Guide/ DVR

Who knew you would miss knowing which channel was showing what or also being able to record a show that you are too busy to watch that night. While this is definitely a comfort we don't really need while at school, it's for sure one that we probably took for granted while living at home.

8. Comfort of Your Family

It's always so nice to come home to your family after several long weeks away at school. I know I never expect to miss my parents as much as I do every time I go to school, but it makes coming back home for breaks and holidays that much more special. No matter what's going on in your life, no matter what stress you're under because of exams and homework and just the future of your life, your family will always be there to support and comfort you. It's always a nice reminder when you come home that you do have a support system of people rooting for you to suceed.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
