Just some friendly reminders to college students everywhere, advice I need to remind myself sometimes too.
1. It's okay not have a 4.0 GPA. My rule of thumb, as long as you know you tried your best. It's about actually learning and retaining the information not just going through the motions for a good grade.
2. It's OK to call home. It's okay to miss home too. Sometimes you just need to talk to your family or friends from back home. They tend to give really good advice (well at least mine do).
3. It's OK not to like all of your classes. Not every class is going to be riveting or something that you will want to pursue farther, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important or that you shouldn’t try to get something out of it.
4. It's OK to actually like your classes. Even if it is a Literary Criticism class at 8 am. You like what you like. You don’t have to feed into the “all my classes are soooooo stupid and pointless” that’s just crap.
5. It is good to have some downtime. Going form one thing to the next is exhausting and if you don’t want to go out on the weekend you don’t have to. If you need to sit and do nothing for an hour do it. You know what you need in order to be happy and healthy.
6. If you need help get it. Just because you are in college does not make you superwoman, and does not mean you have to be 100% independent. If you need any kind of help seek it out without shame.
7. Everyone is ALWAYS learning. Even in your three-hour boring lecture, there is at least one thing you can take away. Take every chance you can to have a “teachable moment." This also means that your professors and parents and friends are all still learning things too.
8. That higher education is something not everyone has accesses to.Take advantage of your ability to grow and learn. Enjoy it.
