As a second year college athlete, there has been many things I have come to learn, whether they be good or bad. Being a student athlete in college is one of the best opportunities you can involve yourself in. Sports is how I have made many of my friends and how I get involved on campus. There are some things all college athletes should know when going through this time..
1. Use your spare time wisely!
Everyone loves having extra time in between activities to relax and unwind, but for a student athlete, that is not always the case. Use your spare time to get homework done, take a small power nap, or organize. You won't regret it in the end.
2. Practice will never last as long as your coach says.
3-5 pm practice? Nope, that's more like 3:30-6:30.
3. Sports actually help your time management skills.
I have learned that I actually prioritize my time more than I would when I was not doing a sport. Since I know I have workouts and meets, I know I need to schedule my time and school work around that.
4. You aren't alone.
Everyone in your sport, whatever it may be, is all doing the same amount of work as you. So no matter how hard or long the practice is, you have your teammates to get through this with you.
5. Hard work pays off.
It may hurt in the moment, but trust me, you'll be happy you did the work.
6. Your coaches are there for YOU.
If you are stressing or struggling, talk to one of your coaches. Odds are it's not the first time they have heard this specific issue. They want you healthy and happy, because when you feel good, they look good.
7. Long road trips are for sleep.
Take advantage of these 4 hour trips! If you don't sleep, you'll wish you did.
8. Teammates double as best friends.
I met some of my best friends through my sport and they introduced me to even more of my friends. Best friends on and off the track, field or court.
