Be a Billiken.

8 SLU Traditions That Should Never End

There seems to be a wonderful yet mysterious equation that makes SLU the place to be, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. From spotting our billboards along the highway to saying hi to the students on those billboards across campus, Saint Louis University is home. These are just a few of many traditions that keep us students coming back for more.

1. The Hammocks

Is it even SLU if you can’t ever snag a hammock because they are always taken? In that slim chance that you are able to grab a hammock, you savor those moments for as long as you can.

2. Late Night At Pickleman's

Pizza will never ever sound bad at any time of the day, but there is something about shoving that thin crust supreme down your face anytime after 9 p.m. that makes it that much better. And they deliver.

3. Geeking Out At Dr. Pestello

We have the coolest President across the board; I am convinced of it. He can woo a crowd with his jaw dropping speaking abilities, yet he is so personable when walking around campus. There is always a smile on that man's face, so it is hard not to freak out as a Student when he shakes your hand and tells you to have a great day. Dr. Pestello is the face of SLU and does a fine job representing us.

4. Gries Breakfast

So notorious. There is much to say about SLU’s dining options, with Gries breakfast being one. All sorrows disappear when the hilarious and spunky caterers hand you two fluffy pancakes and that all you can eat bacon. Even as an upperclassman, when Sunday morning rolls around, Gries is the place to be.

5. Vandy

What is this Vandy place? Is it Vanderbilt? Unfortunately no, it is not. It is a under par yet always visited place of mystery and awe. Stories are created and friendships are strengthened after visiting Vandy. Then the older you are, different stories are made and different friendships are strengthened as you watch confused freshman travel in herds while you giggle at the clock tower. Remember folks, the drinking age is 21.

6. Humps Plunger For Your 21st

Speaking of 21, what better way to celebrate then having your first legal shot out of a plunger? No matter the day, Humphrey’s Bar and Grill will accept you with open arms on the midnight of your birthday with a free shot and a beautiful plunger as the shot glass that you will have for the rest of your life. To outsiders, this may sound a bit funky but at SLU it is a pivotal moment in one’s young life.

7. Every Time The Billiken Is Around, Selfie Game Is Strong

What even is a Billiken? A good luck charm? A marshmallow? The child of Voldemort and Mrs. Smurf? Only a SLU student can ever find out the true answer to that question. But no matter how awesomely creepy our mascot is, whenever it is out in public there is a line out the door to have a photo op with our favorite Billiken.

8. 9pm Sunday Mass

What better way to fuel your energy for the upcoming week than sitting in one of the most beautiful College Churches in the nation with the best company around? Students’ filling the pews with excitement is the Saint Louis University way.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
