I may not have been in college for long but I have sure learned to appreciate the little things in life. College isn't easy, especially as a freshman who attends a university far from home. As this year has gone by I have found things that I now appreciate more than ever, and I decided to name a few for you.

  1. Sunshine: The feeling of the sun and the heat as it touches your skin is simply pleasing. Living in Washington, any sunshine that we get is seen as a blessing.
  2. Coffee: I never thought this would become a staple for me but sure enough it has. Not sure how I'd get through all the night study sessions without it.
  3. Dry Shampoo: This may seem odd, but do not under estimate the powers of dry shampoo. This comes in handy on those days you wake up at 7:55 for your 8 am class.
  4. Mail: I have come to find it exciting to get something in the mail. Between letters, care packages and amazon orders, I personally hope I get mail.
  5. Concealer: This has become one of my dearest friends ever since I started college. Got acne? Conceal it. Dark circle under your eyes from studying too late? Conceal that mess. It works wonders.
  6. Texts/ Calls From Mom: It seems as if my mother know exactly when I need her. I may not talk to her every day, but when I do she lifts my spirits within a ten-minute phone call.
  7. Sleep: This is a no-brainer, but sleep is key. Never have I ever taken so many naps in my life until I started college. I seize each and every opportunity I get to sleep in. I never appreciated a good nights rest as much as I do as a freshman in college.
  8. Friends: This one may seem very cliche but it is true, I've never appreciated friends more. They become your family away from home. They take care of you when you need it most. It warms my heart to get the "let me know if you need anything" text from your friends. You keep up with each other schedules and make time for one another. I appreciate them more than anything because even though you may be so far from family, your friends do all they can to make you feel at home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
