Sheahan Hall, the dorm that does not have an elevator and is sometimes super quiet. When I told my friends I lived in Sheahan, they would refer to Sheahan as "that dorm" as if it was a crazy party dorm when it really wasn't. Sheahan was a nice relaxing time where I spent watching classic movies, TV shows, and video games with my roommate and friends and where I also pulled all-nighters in the common room.I had a mix of times in Sheahan, both great and some weird. Of course, it wasn't like Champgnat or Leo or Marian, but it was Sheahan and it was fine on its own. If you lived in Sheahan maybe you can relate to my experiences as Sheahan resident.

1. The Stairs

The stairs in Sheahan used to be a little bit of an annoyance to me and made me wonder why I didn't want a dorm with an elevator such as Leo or Champ. I thought this when I either had a heap of things to carry to my room or just came back from a hard track workout. I was definitely not a fan of the Sheahan stairs when I left and came back from my Winter and Spring breaks. I would have to carry all of my laundry down. But after leaving Sheahan you are probably a pro at carrying things up and down the stairs in your new living places.

2. The Common Room

I always thought the Sheahan common room was the best freshmen dorm common in all of Marist. This spacious room featured not only a Foosball table but also a ping-pong table as well. The room had a beautiful flat-screen television and it offered a quality view of the Hudson River and the McCann Center and peaceful views of snowfall during those non-stop Monday snow days last winter. The cozy sofas were great to take some short naps in between classes, and those RHC activities were great for making or grabbing a nice snack or two. If you lived in Sheahan you might miss the fancy fun room that was the Sheahan common room. And even though you might like the common areas in your new living areas some small part of you longing to have 24/7 access to that ping-pong and football table.

3. The Bathrooms

One thing that I would not miss about Sheahan was the floor bathrooms which were home to late night clogged toilets and unflushed urinals. I would get so infuriated that some people didn't have the decency to just flush when they left. I remember the constant clogging lead to the RA taping the Office Space meme that said "If you could flush the toilets after you're done, THAT'D WOULD BE GREAT." If you lived in Sheahan you know the struggle of having to use gross bathrooms and are truly appreciative when you know you have a new personal bathroom that you can control.

4. The Mocking Vending Machine

I always wondered if anyone else would have trouble getting their snack from the vending machine, because sometimes when I tried to get a nice quality Snickers or Kit Kat bar from the machine, it would stop moving right when the candy was about to drop. Those moments would always make me feel that the machine was mocking me and saying "Haha, nope not today." I would always have to shake the machine to get the candy out or had to get the security guard by the side to stop laughing at my failed efforts and help me out. After Sheahan, you probably don't miss the barely working vending machine ;however, you'll possibly miss the quick and easy access to some quality late night snacks.

5. The Cold Showers

Remember the times where the showers wouldn't be working in your favor and they would just give some nice cold splashes of water during your morning shower? When I would get the notice that the hot water would be off in the showers I would sometimes resort to the Leo or Champ showers. I know they were not my showers to use but who could blame a guy for wanting a nice warm shower. After facing the icy showers of Sheahan, I hope you know the relaxing feeling of having nice warm showers.

6. Food that was thrown on the ground

I don't know what the deal was second semester when people started to throw food (mostly apples) on the ground floor. Was it to just say, "I had some nice food and I THREW IT ON THE GROUND!" I mean, it would be sort of funny for a few hours but then it just got pretty old, pretty fast. I remembered I would have to walk through the food stained floor just wondering what game or prank was being played and when it was just going to end. Since Sheahan, you might make sure you have some decently clean floors and you might be the person that throws food on the ground on a daily basis.

7. Closeness of the McCann Center

Knowing that the McCann Center was right next to Sheahan made me so thankful that I lived in the dorm. I was glad that when I had to go to McCann for some late night workouts I was the closest I could be. Through the hot, rainy,or snowy days I was happy that just across that parking lot was a nice comfortable gym waiting for me. You might miss the short four minute walks to McCann when you now know that McCann is on the other side of campus.

8. The Silent Nights

What I liked from time to time was when my floor would be quiet nights where I would hear minimal amount of rap mixes and country music. Those nights would make me feel so happy that I could write a paper or study in peace or watch a movie or TV show with my roommate without any unwanted background music. It would be these nights that I was glad I lived in Sheahan. In your new townhouses or rooms you might miss those quiet nights when nights are filled with rowdy roommates, or you might really know how to enjoy those silent nights when all is calm and all is right.

If you lived in Sheahan you know that it wasn't the most popular dorm, but it was a nice and quiet dorm where everything was pretty much easily accessible to food, fitness, and fun. I hope wherever you live now you still keep the good and bad memories form the hallowed floors of Sheahan Hall and never forget where you started at Marist College.
