When driving, and even when walking, through the Greek parking lot behind Greek row, we see a lot of chaos. It is almost as if all of the normal rules of driving are thrown out and only the strongest will survive. My first time walking through this lot felt like I was just trying not to get hit or make someone mad.
Some of the most basic rules of driving are the ones we most often forget. Here are some of the most common rules that are broken in that lot, and some ways to try and avoid them….
1. Don't make your own parking space.
This one should be pretty self-explanatory, but then again, all of these rules should be. When we were learning to drive, we were taught to only park in places we are supposed to park in, aka: a parking lot. This does not mean that you should park as close as you can to a dumpster or to a tree so that your car is out of the road, just no.
2. Don't walk in the middle of the street.
Honestly, this is one that seems the easiest to follow, but almost everyone breaks it multiple times a day. Don’t walk in the center of the road and then make a face at a car who is forced to wait for you or go around you. I know you have places to be, but so do I and so do the fifteen people behind me, waiting for me to move my car.
3. Drive on the right side of the road.
I can’t tell you how many times I have had to do a nine-point turn in order to turn around because someone decided to drive on the wrong side of the road and stop their car. Please, please, please stay on the right side of the road.
4. Don't stop in the middle of the street to have a conversation.
I know there are so many interesting things to talk about, but there is no need to completely stop walking in the middle of the street or to stop your car just to say hi. We are all busy people who have better things to be doing than waiting for the car in the middle of the street to move.
5. Do not take up two parking spaces.
It is completely okay that your truck doesn’t fully fit in most parking spaces, I understand that. However, if you take up two parking spaces just because you don’t want someone to park next to you, or just parked terribly, then that is totally not okay. There is already a small amount of available parking spaces and you taking up an extra one helps nobody.
6. Wait for cars to move before you try and pass them.
Okay, I can understand why you are frustrated that a car is stopped in front of you and isn’t moving. But if you could just wait a few more minutes before revving your engine past them into the oncoming lane, it will help us all out. All that does is create a bit more chaos when oncoming cars force you to stop in the middle of passing the car in front of you, so please do us all a favor and wait.
7. Stop at a stop sign.
There are not that many stop signs in the Greek lot, so when approaching one of them it is only right to actually stop at it. Usually this is where people are crossing the road or it is at an intersection, so it can’t hurt to stop and let them pass.
8. Don't park in spaces that your car doesn't fit into.
It is okay to admit that your truck or car is too big to fit in a normal compact parking space. It is not okay, however, to park in one of these spaces and force cars driving in the road to maneuver around your car. It is not polite and it really just sucks.
