7 Reasons I Want To Bring Back Freshman Year
Spring 2016 | Anasa Alamgir

I am an overly emotional person. I become very passionate about things and I hold my memories very close to my heart. Recently I have been thinking about last year and how different my life used to be back then and I remember all the memories I had with my newly found friends at Howard University during my freshman year. It has been quite an experience, here at Howard, but I feel as though there were a lot of things I could have done last year to make my experience even better, and made wiser decisions that would help me make my upcoming college years a more pleasant experience.

Truly, some of the things happening this year really take me back to Fall 2015, and I thought I might as well share with you so you know how to deal with things and not get carried away (not in your feelings, but in unnecessary things that will waste your time).

1. Sophomore year is a bi****.Yes it really is.

Every upperclassman you meet will tell you the exact same thing. Especially if you're doing Computer Science, I swear by God things will definitely be harder, if not stressful, by sophomore year. You will wish you had AP credits transferred so you could take some of the core classes in freshman year and sophomore year would be much better. They talk about Comp Org and I believe it's not too bad but you should make a habit of getting assignments done early on, beginning with freshman year. That way you are used to the pressure of 'sophomore year'.

2. Music now takes me back to October 2015

Songs like 'Closer' and 'All We Know' take me back to freshman year when I first came to this place and that one person who I believe is my soulmate. Things would have been much better between us if not for some decisions that I made last year. As much as I want to go back to those days, I don't want you to feel that way too. October is definitely the cuffing season, and what lyric would be better than ' baby pull me closer in the backseat of your rover..'? The Chainsmokers are really turning up their music this fall! And not just them, but The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, and of course Drake, have released singles that don't remind me of how my freshman year would have been.

3. There was a lot left unfinished from last year.

I had a lot of time last year, even with 19 credits I definitely could have at least been an active member of one club. I could have participated in conferences during spring semester when I had 16 credits but decided to hang out with friends and not think about studying or school for that matter! But as Ursula says, life's full of choices. You do it or you don't.

4. I wasn't ready

Honestly, I didn't know what college would be like 8,000 miles away from home. I wasn't ready for a lot of changes and I guess I could have done freshman year a lot better. I wasn't adjusting well with a completely different country, of course no one would, but I wish I knew people who could have helped me plan things out, or share my problems with someone I trusted, instead of being caged in myself, and being scared of being judged. You will be judged, criticized, even rejected for your ideas, but that doesn't mean you don't ask for help when you need it.

5. I want to work on projects and all these assignments are not allowing me the time

Only if I had worked harder last year I would have been able to catch up with schoolwork easier and finish my assignments on time to be able to work on side projects and even find a part time job. As a computer science major, things do get difficult but if you get your base right, you can be less stressed during sophomore year.

6. All the shows I could have watched right now

This November Netflix is scheduled to have a lot of new movies and shows. And I still have piles of shows left to watch from last year. The anime I could watch in my free time. But I don't have free time. If only, if only....

7. I want to sleep right now

But I have 3 assignments due tomorrow that I haven't even started.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
