8 Reasons I Look Forward To Going Home For A Weekend

Too bad, I don't have any magical, ruby red slippers to transport me there.

There truly is no place like home. Although each semester flies by and I'm long over my freshman year homesickness, there's something about anticipating a weekend home that makes me really excited. After being surrounded by only college students for weeks, eating (not so) nutritional food, and making up several excuses not to do laundry, it's nice to get away for a little while and go back to my hometown. These are my 10 favorite things about driving back to Morris County for a weekend!

1. Home-cooked meals

After living off of pasta and soup for two months, I'm eager to have a real meal for dinner.

2. My bed

My bed at school is comfortable enough, but it's nothing like my bed at home. There's no greater feeling than falling onto the soft mattress as soon as I walk through the door.

3. Driving through my town

Even though I'm never gone for a really long period of time, almost every time I come home, something has changed. Whether it's a new restaurant in town, a paved road, or a house for sale on my street, it's always interesting to see how things are different from the last time I was home.

4. Seeing family, friends, neighbors, the whole bit

Most of the people I see at school, I don't see at home, and vice versa, so it's nice to have some time to spend with anyone I don't see all that often anymore.

5. My go-to restaurants, stores, etc.

Although many of the same chain stores and restaurants in my hometown can also be found near my school, there are some mom-and-pop shops that can only be found in one place, and you can bet I visit those places every time I come home.

6. Spare time

I try to make a rule for myself that I won't do schoolwork at home so that I can actually enjoy myself. It's so nice to be able to spend a weekend without thinking about school or work.

7. Pantries full of snacks

I don't know if you've noticed, but this is the third time I've mentioned food because it's very, very important. I have way more snacks to choose from at home than I do in my sole cabinet at school.

8. MY DOG

This is probably the one I look forward to most, because talking to her on the phone just isn't enough. There's a place in my heart reserved for my dog that nobody will ever fill.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
