The promises we make for the new year are always the same- lose weight, eliminate soda from your diet, attempt to volunteer more, or cut back on the amount of chocolate you eat. Although these are all reasonable resolutions, there are better promises we can make for ourselves (ones that we can actually keep). Below are eight New Years resolutions to consider. Some of the promises are simple, others are difficult, but, in the end, the reward for each is immeasurable.
1. Give thanks more often
Always be mindful of saying thank-you to others. Constantly show your appreciation. It’s easy to forget to thank people for the small things. Even when someone isn’t doing something at that very moment, thank him or her for always being there. Your thanks will be noticed. It reminds people that the good they do in the world is recognized.
2. Be patient
Although it’s extremely frustrating to receive a wrong order or wait in a terribly long line at the store, understand that people are human. They could be having an awful day or it’s busy and they have a lot on their hands. Your patience is much needed and makes their job a lot easier. Patience is not only good for others, but eases your temper.
3. Practice kindness
Unfortunately, we live in a place where people can be treated cruelly. It’s difficult to escape the bad in the world, but experiencing the good makes it better. Practice kindness. Smile at others and offer your hand. You might be the very light that a person needs.
4. Learn to love yourself
This is probably the toughest one on the list. For most people, learning to love yourself is a difficult task, but the most rewarding. Granted, it may take longer than a year to fully love the person you are, but by promising yourself to begin those steps to a happier you is a promise that will ultimately lead to a better life.
5. Challenge yourself
Push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Test your limits. Promise yourself to step outside of your safety bubble, because once you do you open yourself to a world of opportunities.
6. Give more
Whether it be a hug, clothes to Goodwill, or your time, give back. Giving to other people not only shows you care, but it leaves a positive impact, no matter how small the gift may be.
7. Listen more
Sometimes we talk more than we listen, and many times what people need most is someone to listen to them. It shows that you care enough to hear what they have to say. It may be a simple promise, but for others, it means the world.
8. Live happily
This is another tough resolution, but in no way impossible to achieve. No one will ever live a completely happy life, because the pitfalls we come across are unavoidable. But you can live loving what you do, who you’ve become, and be excited for the world ahead of you. We only live once, and it’s always much better with a smile.
