I always feel so bad as I stare into my refrigerator at 2 in the morning when I'm looking for something, anything, to nourish my body. I'm not sure if I feel so bad because it is empty, or if it's the fact that it's 2 am. There are a few masterpieces I have been able to piece together with this and that, but it has never been anything worthy to place in front of Gordon Ramsey. Here are a few of those said meals; bear with me on these and don't be surprised if you find that I have the same 2 am (creative) chef mind as you do.
1. Cheese-stick tortillas.
I have a few cheese sticks and a bag of tortillas, let's think outside of the box. Shred those cheese sticks onto a tortilla and heat that sucker in the microwave for 30 seconds. Muy delicioso!
Pro tip: Crunch some tortilla chips on top before you wrap it up; the added crunch is a sensation to the mouth.
2. Pizza omelette.
It's time to face that box of pizza that has been shoved into the back of the fridge to waste away. Whip up a few eggs, tear up those old slices and mix them to get an omelette with accented with the taste of that grungy pizzeria.
Pro tip: Drizzle that container of un-used garlic sauce on to for added flavor.
3. French toast.
That old loaf of bread has been getting staler and staler every day, ew. Take one egg, whip it up, soak the bread in the mix, and cook over the stove. This will give you a taste of France, or what society has dubbed to be their go-to breakfast treat. Sprinkle on some cinnamon to make it even tastier.
4. Rice burger.
When did I order Chinese food last? Well, you might as well use that old container of rice so it doesn't go to waste. Form the rice into two patty's and cook in a pan until solid. Then slide a hamburger patty between the two, and that tub of Asian cuisine has instantly become an American favorite.
5. PB&J with a Mexican twist.
Remember those burritos I made earlier? Yeah, those leftover tortillas aren't going to go to waste. Self-explanatory preparation; I could prepare these with my eyes closed.
Pro tip: Slice a banana and wrap it in for more of a flavor blast.
6. French fries to mashed potatoes.
Cold, day old french fries are never good no matter how much ketchup you drench them in. Mash up those fries into a nice sauce, microwave to your desired temperature, and enjoy!
Pro tip: Mix cheese in. You can never have too much cheese.
7. Pulled pork nachos.
No one has found a way to use up leftover BBQ -- that is until today. Spread some nachos on a baking tray, sprinkle cheese and the pork on top, and bake until the cheese is melted. Add salsa if desired, but it's just as good without it. Trust me.
8. Spaghetti pancakes.
This one may be a little bit of a stretch, but it is just as delicious as regular pancakes. From the aging pasta into pancake shape and cook in a well-buttered pan until browned. Add syrup and enjoy.
Pro tip: Sprinkle some fruit or old M&Ms on top. Actually just the M&Ms -- that tastes much better.
I know by now you are probably thinking that I have a weird sense of creativity, but don't be surprised if you find yourself considering making one of these recipes. Although they were clearly experimented by a hungry college student, they have character and actually taste good -- I think. So from my kitchen to yours, bon appetit!
