As a female biracial women, I've had a lot of people make assumptions about me when they first meet me. So, I've complied a list of things people have said to me. Keep in mind all of these are actual things that have been said to me within the first conversation we've had.
Regarding my race...
Don't get me wrong if asked nicely I will gladly tell you that I'm biracial and answer any questions you may have. But I don't enjoy when the conversation starts out like this...
1. "So you're Mexican, right?"
No, I'm not, but before I can correct them one of the following happens...
2. "Oh, Puerto Rican, then?"
3. "Indian?"
*Shakes head* Then comes my favorite question.
4. "What the heck are you then?"
If you'd let me speak I'd answer that. I'm biracial, thank you very much. I am not an object. Does my race really matter that much? No matter what I am, I'm still the same person. Then the flurry of questions...
6. "Oh, I guess I can see that."
I'm glad you can see that I'm not lying about my race, I guess.
5. "Which sides which then?"
6. "Do you identify with one side more than the other?"
No, not really. I don't think I was told I had to choose a side.
Regarding my last name...
7. "You must love the curry spice then. Lol."
Never had it. If that the best joke you can come up with please stop. Then there's the obvious one.
8. "Omg, are you related to Steph Curry? I can see a little resemblance."
I don't know what you are seeing...but anyway not related as far as I'm aware. You should know not everyone with the same last name are related.
There's probably a lot more comments like these ones, but I think this shows you the point. Don't ask these questions before you ask how I'm doing. I am sure the people who ask mean well, but I'd rather you get to know me before hounding me down with questions.
