Being the fangirl that I undoubtedly am, of course there are characters from books, movies, and TV shows that I love. Everyone gets attached to characters, even if they don’t want to admit it. And if that said character dies, it makes things even worse. Now, even though not all the characters on this list are dead, I do apologize for giving away any spoilers. But you can just get over it.
1. Augustus Waters
Gus is the character that killed me the most. While reading The Fault in Our Stars, John Green made Augustus the boy of every girl’s dreams. Here are just a few of the lines that made me fall in love with him:
“It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you.”
“You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but you do have some say in who hurts you.”
And then, finally:
“I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only Earth we’ll ever have, and I’m in love with you.”
I assumed John Green was leading up to the girl, Hazel, dying. Then, though, my heart broke into a million pieces, and Augustus Waters died. This was by far the worst fictional death I ever had to face, and that can still be said to this day. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it.
2. Han Solo
With the release of The Force Awakens, I was inspired to go back and rewatch all of the Star Wars movies. This proved to be a bad idea, mainly because it relit the sparks of my love for Han Solo. Harrison Ford is by far one of my favorite people on the planet, and that’s due to his character Han Solo. And I knew he was going to die in the Episode VII, but that didn’t stop me from literally sobbing in the theater when that did happen. Han and Leia are seriously relationship goals, even though he may be dead.
3. Rose Tyler
Doctor Who killed me as a whole, and it still continues to do so. However, there’s one Doctor and one girl that ruined my life the most. The tenth Doctor, David Tennant, has always been my personal favorite, and his relationship with Rose was so wonderful. When she had to leave, though, and go into that parallel universe, I cried harder than I had ever cried before. It still makes me sad to think about.
4. Carl Fredricksen
If you’ve never seen Up, I highly recommend that you do so. The first ten minutes will ruin your life forever. The first part of the movie is basically a flashback of Carl and his wife Ellie’s relationship, all the way up to her death. Disney had everyone—me especially—crying in the first ten minutes of the movie.
5. Tris Prior
This was the ultimate plot twist of any book ever. If you haven’t read the Divergent series, then I’m sorry for doing this to you. But when Tris Prior, the main character of the series, died in the third book, safe to say I was shocked. It’s an unspoken rule that you can’t kill off the main character. But I guess that didn’t matter to Veronica Roth.
6. Angel from Rent
If you’ve never seen the musical Rent, stop what you’re doing and go watch it right now. The movie adaptations of the musical is one of my favorites, and no matter how many times I watch it, the death of the character Angel because of AIDS kills me (no pun intended) every time.
7. Mufasa from The Lion King
I don’t even have to explain this one. You all know what I’m talking about.
8. Allie and Noah
Last but not least, Nicholas Sparks ruined everyone’s life with the simultaneous death of Allie and Noah in The Notebook. By choosing to cast Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in the movie as young Noah and Allie, things got even more emotional. I’m still not over it.
If you haven’t seen or read any of these movies or books, or if you just need a good cry, I suggest you go do so immediately. It might make you realize how sucky your life is or just make you want to cry forever, but I promise you won’t regret it.
