Every girl needs certain friends. While it's great to have your crew of girls to gab with over the latest "Bachelor" episode, there's some types of friends you just seriously need in your life.
1. The Opposite Friend
I like sweet food, she likes salty; I like my room warm, she turns the thermostat to 60; I like pink sparkles; she's anything but pink sparkles; I wear jeans, she usually wears skirts; I like romantic comedies, she has a passion for horror films.
This girl and I are complete opposites. The few things we do have in common: we're both blind; we love "Wicked"; we both have a bit of Hufflepuff in us; and we both have very dark, dry, witty senses of humor.
We lived in a shoebox together for six weeks over the summer nearly eight years ago and we've been inseparable ever since. For some odd reason, we became best friends. It's amazing having her in my corner. She's smart, funny, and really helps me see the world in so many different lenses. She teaches me lessons without even knowing she's doing it. Every girl needs someone who is their polar opposite just to balance them out.
2. The Cheerleader Friend
It's always a good idea to have a positive cheerleader-type friend. She gives you support when you need it and even when you don't. She always has something positive to say to you and is always there to keep you going strong. She won't let you quit and keeps reminding you of the finish line. They don't actually have to be a real cheerleader either.
3. The Counselor Friend
It's great to have a friend you can vent to. A person where you can just email them and let it all out. You can scream; you can go caps lock on them; you can write a novel; you can cry and they're still there. Nor do they really care that you are a complete mess. That friend is just there to comfort you and gently talk you through it, even if it takes all night.
4. The Translator Friend
Preferably, this should be a best friend of the opposite sex. These people come in very handy when you like someone, but have no idea how to begin to flirt. Or you think someone might like you, but you don't want to misinterpret the signals. What do you do when he winks at you in the hallway? Do I smile and giggle or walk past and "accidentally" brush his arm? It's no secret that guys and girls find one another confusing, so it helps to have a translator in your corner.
5. The Hilarious Friend
This is the girl (or guy) you can have a blast with. You're breathless with laughter. But then you look at each other and just crack up again. Laughter is a great positive reinforcement and mood booster. While I'm sure all your friends are hilarious, having a special person you can just laugh with harder than you've ever laughed before is a wonderful thing.
6. The Drunk Friend
This is the friend (or friends) that can see you drunk as heck and still love you. They may give you crap and tease your mercilessly, but they still love you. Why else would they hold your hair back while you puke? If they didn't care, would they text your roommate at one in the morning telling them you're spending the night? Or call you the next morning? Plus, they usually don't tell you the drunk stuff you did and if needed they take your phone away so you don't mortally embarrass yourself.
7. The Deep Friend
One of my best friends is my "deep" friend. We can have deep conversations any time of the day or night. Sometimes deep conversations are the best conversations. Why? Because you really have to pay attention to the other person. You really delve into the prominent issues of the world. Plus you get to vent about them which makes it even better. You learn to appreciate other views and you can still remain friends. I think it's a total win-win to have these people around.
8. The Fun Friend
Sometimes, you need a night out. This friend will give you that night out without question while still making sure you're sober enough for class the next day. If you need to get away give her a call. She's always down for a road trip or adventure. Need coffee? Want to see a movie? Grab this girl and go.
If you can think of any other friends a person absolutely needs to have, share your thoughts and ideas! I just think that these eight are a good solid core - whether or not you hang out with them all the time.
