8 Amazing Things You Feel When You Come Home For The Summer

Coming home for the summer is a bittersweet feeling. There is such happiness being able to get back into the comfort of your own home, but there is sadness when you leave your beloved friends that you are used to spending everyday with. Here's a few things that make coming home such a great time:

1. Being reunited with your family

It is a feeling like no other. Of course there’s FaceTime and you get to virtually see them, but it’s just not the same. Your younger siblings look like they’ve grown a foot and aged two years since you last saw them, and you’ve only been gone a few months. Being able to hug them and be in their presence is such a sweet feeling that can’t be replicated when you’re at school.

2. Seeing your “friends from home”

Even though you love your friends at school, there’s something special about the friends that you don’t talk to every day, but when you see them, it’s like you never spent any time apart. There’s so much catching up to do and gossip that you’ve missed out on. These are the friends that will always hold a special place in your heart.

3.The food

Whether it’s your mom’s cooking or your favorite restaurant that doesn’t have a location near your school, it’s good to be back. You gotta love it when your mom says “what do you want for dinner tonight?” and the endless possibilities of your favorite home cooked meals run through your head. On top of that, you realize you don’t have to lift a finger and you still get to eat. This totally beats cereal four nights out of the week.

4. Sleeping in your bed

Making do with what you sleep in at school, it does not compare to sleeping in your bed. You’ve made it to where your bed basically conforms to your body and you sleep like a baby every night in it. It’s also just a comforting feeling sleeping under the same roof as your parents.

5. Not having to do your own laundry

Although throwing in your dirty clothes and a tide pod is pretty easy, it’s such a pleasant surprise when you walk into your bedroom and your clothes are already clean and folded on your bed. If you’re lucky enough to have parents that do that, you are pretty darn lucky. But let's be honest, we just need clean swimsuits and towels in the summer.

6. No homework

Three months of no homework, do I need to elaborate?

7. The happiness your dog has when they see you

Pets are awesome, and they make you feel loved, especially when you come home and they’re jumping up and down or begging you to hold them. Let’s not forget the endless amount of kisses they want to give you. They know you were gone, and no they didn’t forget you at all, and they are just as excited to see you as you are them.

8.Taking a break from “adulting”

Even though there are summer jobs, summer classes, and different things that are expected of you now that you’re an “adult”, during the summer, you get a little bit of a break from having so many duties and "adulting"-type tasks.

While it seems like forever until the next time you are going to see your college friends, the summer always flies by, and you will meet up with your friends soon in the familiar place you call your second home. Don’t forget to enjoy the moments of happiness you gain from coming home.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
