My mom recently went to a talk, and when she got back she immediately called me and shared some advice with me has really stuck with me. The speaker stressed in his speech the importance of taking time each day to “get your sunshine.”
Basically, “getting your sunshine” means taking time out of each day to do something that makes YOU happy. Life is busy with work, chores, studies, clubs, activities, and social obligations; however, all of this can be really grating and can quickly wear a person down. When life is pushing back, it’s really important to make sure to take time out of your day and do something that will bring you peace. It can be something that makes you smile, something that makes you laugh, or something that helps you to relax.
It can be something you do alone or something you do with other people. It can be something that takes five minutes or something that takes an hour. What’s important is that it makes YOU happy. Here is a list of 7 ways that you can get your sunshine:
1. Read a book.
Reading is a great way to get your sunshine because it is completely time flexible. You can read a chapter of a book in five to ten minutes, or you can read several chapters for an hour or more. It’s something you can do indoors or outdoors, rain or shine. There are so many books available there is truly something for everyone.
2. Watch some TV.
There is nothing wrong with binging a television show. Episodes range from about 20 to 45 minutes, so in the long scheme of things it’s not something that takes a lot of your day. TV is also something that is really good to do while multitasking – you can watch an episode of your favorite while you run on the treadmill! It’s also something that can be really comforting if you’re returning to a favorite series.
3. Watch a movie.
This is one of my personal favorites, but one that’s a bit more of a time commitment. Movies these days can average nearly two and a half hours, and if you want to see a new movie the cost of tickets can be expensive. However, film has become a passion of mine. It’s not a way I can get my “sunshine” every day, but when I can it is a rare treat.
4. Work out.
I would argue that a good work out is something that should just be worked into anyone’s daily routine because taking a little time each day to be physically active improves your physical and mental health. If it’s not something that you think you can consciously build into your routine, make it your occasional “sunshine.” It’s something that will make you feel healthy and productive, so if downtime isn’t your thing, this may be the type of “sunshine” for you.
5. Go to a sporting event.
This is my absolute favorite way to get “sunshine.” It may seem counter-intuitive. How can something as stressful as a double-overtime game possibly a good way to relax? It might not be for everyone; however, if you really love the team your supporting the adrenaline of the event can be really stress-relieving. It may be fun to go with friends, but if plans fall through this is something you can do and lose yourself in the crowd and the game.
6. Go for a hike.
This, like a workout, is a good way to get physical activity while relaxing. It is a bit more weather contingent that a simple work out at a gym, but being outside on a nice day can be one of the most relaxing things you can do.
7. Spend time with friends.
Some people are introverts and some are extroverts. We all need time alone, but too much time in isolation can be just as stressful as too much socialization. Finding a balance between the two is vital. Spending a little time out for coffee, on a walk, or simply talking to friends and family can be incredibly relaxing.
Getting your “sunshine” every day is important for your personal mental health. It gives you a chance to relax, gives you a chance to take time away from your hectic life and do something that your truly enjoy. Make sure you take some time each day for YOU!
