7 Ways To Stay Mentally Healthy This Holiday Season

The holidays are always stressful. Between family parties, the stress of buying/not being able to afford gifts, dealing with small children, and the grief you may feel if you've lost a loved one, it can all be a little too much. Not to mention that, if you're a college student, finals are happening. It is important to take care of yourself mentally as well as physically, especially during this season. That's why I'm writing this. Here are seven ways to stay mentally healthy this holiday season!

1. Take a break.

It’s important to take breaks. It can be from family, paying bills, figuring out gifts, whatever you’re doing. It can be as long or as short as you want. If you’re with family, just politely excuse yourself, find a quiet room, and just hang out there for a while. If you’re not, put down whatever you’re doing and just hang out for a while. Take deep breaths if you’re feeling anxious, or watch something cute or funny if you’re feeling down. You can return to whatever you were doing whenever you please.

2. Drink water.

Staying hydrated is the best way to feel good. If you’re hydrated, you won’t be as tired, you’ll be in a better mood, your joints and muscles will work better, and it can prevent headaches! Not to mention that it’s better for you than soda and other beverages.

3. Do something you enjoy.

It can be painting, watching a TV show, writing, or even just taking a nap, but do something you find fun. Doing things you enjoy can improve your mood and make your day just that much better.

4. Think before you turn to anything unhealthy.

How you cope with things is completely up to you- but just because they allow you to cope, doesn’t mean they’re good for you. Smoking, drinking, and doing drugs are absolutely ways to cope, and I won’t pass judgement on you for doing them, but you have to understand the risk you take when you use them to pacify your feelings.

5. Talk to someone.

It could be professionally, or just someone you’re close with, but talk to them. Tell them how you’re feeling. Tell them if you’re stressed, depressed, upset, tired, whatever your feelings are. It’s bad to keep feelings bottled up.

6. Play with some animals.

It’s been suggested by several studies that animals relieve stress, so even if you have to go to a pet store or a shelter, take some time to play with an animal or two.

7. Color in a coloring book

For those who are particularly stressed/anxious, adult coloring books are definitely an option. They are fun, and they get you focusing on something other than what you're worried about.

It's not hard to get stressed out around the holidays, but, as you can see, it's not hard to take care of yourself, either! If you even just try one of these, it can really make a difference! Happy holidays!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
