This is the time of the year where you are ridiculously busy and thank the world that you didn’t join any other obligations, or you’re upset and wishing you had joined so many more things because you have so much time on your hands. If you’re busy, good don’t regret it because in college I promise being busy is so much more rewarding in the end. If you’re not, it’s not too late. It can be intimidating, especially your freshman year, but the active members of the organizations are genuinely willing to help - they always want new members!
1. Go to a club meeting
You may assume that the clubs are not accepting any more people, but that is not true. There are multiple organizations that are still welcoming to new members. Even if it is just showing up to their meetings you will feel like you are contributing much more than you are now.
2. Sign up for spring recruitment
If you didn’t decide to rush in the fall, now is your chance. While I recommended participating in fall recruitment rather than spring, if you have the urge to currently get involved this is a great opportunity and I promise once you’re affiliated your schedule will be booked.
3. Go to group exercise classes
While you may be thinking to yourself, “How will this get me involved on campus?” surprisingly it will. Group exercise classes force you to meet new people, which could open the door for more things to get involved in. Plus, you’re working out so it’s 2 for the price of 1.
4. Participate in Dance-Marathon
A lot of schools have adopted the Dance-Marathon philanthropy. It is one of the most heartwarming experiences that I have ever experienced. The great part is, anyone can do. If you're willing to take the time to fundraise it will feel so rewarding in the end. Also, you’ll meet so many people during the whole fundraising process and marathon. Once you do it one year you’ll want to get even more involved the next year.
5. Sit in the Student government's office
Many students don’t know this but the SGA office is open to anyone. If you’re at a point in your life where you want to get involved but are too intimidated or don’t know what you want to get involved in this is a great idea for you. You will get to see face-to-face what happens in the office and if you go often enough, you probably meet and get to know some of the officers.
6. Find a job on campus
Anyone that has a job of campus will probably tell you they love it. You get to meet fellow students and express your love for the school you attend. Work in the library, give campus tours, make sandwiches in the Student Union, or pick up odd-jobs. It's convenient and most offer work-study options as well.
7. Create a study group
Getting involved on campus doesn’t have to mean you are a part of an organization, it just means that you are involved with something related to your school. This is great if you feel like you need to meet more people but don’t have the time to fully involve your effort into an official organization.
