For this week’s post on Odyssey, I want to focus on the book entitled, "The Writer’s Daily Companion 365 Inspirations and Writing Tips." One of the things I love about this book, among many things, is the fact that it is divided into five days of the week. On each day you get to work on something different, which can be "Writers on Writing," "Motivation," "Writing Class," "Editing," and "Biography."
First, today, we are working on the section on Writing Class. I will share seven tips she gives on why keeping track of your dreams in a journal can be essential in your writing. I have added my own assessment of each one. I hope you find them helpful.
1. Write an entry about a dream.
You can do this by keeping a journal by the side of your bed and writing in it as soon as you wake up.
2. Don’t wait to write in it.
Don't wait to get showered and dressed before writing. It is very
important to write about dreams as soon as you awaken since your
thoughts come directly from your subconscious.
3. Write in the present tense.
This will help you to remember your dream as you write.
4. Be sure to use descriptions.
Be sure to describe the emotions you felt while in the dream. This way
you can bring your story to life and also be able to carry your plot.
5. Describe the characters and actions of your dream.
The characters are always the main point in each of the stories you tell, so is the plot, which leads to the climax in the story. Always jot down specific details you remember!
6. Don’t worry about creating pitch-perfect prose.
Let your writing flow; do not be overly concerned with editing. Just write and worry about correcting any errors later.
7. Write the date of your dream and give it a title.
You can make the story more interesting by using dates, which can be relevant in the story you create.
As author Amy Peters states, "the more you track your dreams the better your dream recall will become.” I hope you found these tips helpful. Happy writing everyone!
